- [aranas]having established a relationship with natives in 9thc, the chinese became the primary trading partner with malays on the islands. Arab, indian, portuguese, and japanese traders followed suit. Chinese contribution to filipino cuisine - noodles(pancit), steamed buns and dumplings (siopao and shumai), egg rolls (lumpia), congee (arroz caldo, pospas, lugaw), soy sauce, ginger, tofu, fermented black beans, dried mushrooms
- [precarious belongings] chinese-filipinos are depicted as disloyal or as refusing to identify as filipinos.  During the spanish colonial times from the 16th to 19th c, chinese economic success was perceived to enrich china at the expense of the indigenous and colonial settlers

  • resentment linked to difficulty in converting chinese to catholicism and repatriation to china of silver monies gained by the chinese through commerce in the islands. The spanish colonial administration was infamous for its atrocities toward the chinese in the philippines massacres and expulsions. Resentment endured through the early 20th c, leading to chinese-filipino business groups resisting commercial nationalism or exclusionist efforts in commerce as in the case of the philippine-chinese general chamber of commerce in 1925 and the filipino-chinese chambers of commerce inc in 1954 (tsinoy community leader 2015).  These business organisations entrenched their presence and cultivated loyalties in the chinese-filipino community by proxying for consulates and creating social capital thru interventions such as establishing cemeteries and hospitals.  The philippine government was concerned that china would exploit the chinese in the philippines to advance communism but recognised the value of chinese in its own modernisation. To alleviate loyal concerns, china excluded the chinese overseas from the purview of its citizenship laws and encouraged them to be citizens in the host land, thereby improving foreign relations with southeast asian states. Marcos passed the naturalisation law two months before forging ties with china in june 1975, amid contentious debates about whether citizenship should be defined by blood vis-a-vis birth. Chinese schools were required to be run by philippine citizens and had to use the national language of instruction.  The pro-kmt already saw their affinities with the philippines while the pro-prc ultimately realised their futre was contingent on what became of philippines.

- https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/society/article/2178748/what-do-filipinos-have-against-chinese-filipinos-meet-tsinoys The influx of Chinese workers into the Philippines has long been a bone of contention for Filipinos – but even the Filipino-Chinese community is divided over the presence of their kin from mainland China. Some, like property agent and writer Wilson Lee Flores, whose ancestors migrated from Fujian seven generations ago, welcome the influx: “They help the economy because they spend their money here,” he said. He supports President Rodrigo Duterte’s South China Sea strategy of laying aside the conflict and obtaining loans and investments from China.Ethnic Chinese make up a small but notable part of the national fabric. They made up around 1.2 million people out of the 105 million national population, according to Teresita Ang-See, co-founder of Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran (United for Prosperity), an NGO advocating integration of ethnic Chinese into the mainstream. She called the local ethnic Chinese population “unique” in all of Southeast Asia because they were “very homogeneous” and came mainly from the port city of Quanzhou in Fujian. She said that, like in the rest of Asia, most migrants to Manila used to come from Zhangzhou, but that stopped after two massacres by Spanish colonial soldiers – in 1603 and 1639. She said American colonisers and later, the 1946 Philippine Republic, continued to restrict migration and preferred Christian converts.“In 1992 we deliberately promoted the use of the word Tsinoy because of the mounting problems brought about by overstaying aliens … accused of smuggling and illegal drugs,” she said, referring to a portmanteau of two Tagalog words – Tsino, for Chinese, and Pinoy, relating to the Philippines or all things Filipino. “We coined the word Tsinoy not to be divisive but to isolate ourselves from media racial labelling … We are not the Chinese they [the media] are talking about.”
Ang-See, who wrote a book on the subject, said Chinese-Filipinos generally classified themselves by three waves of migration from mainland China. The lao cao, meaning the older (or first) generation who arrived before the second world war. There are also the jiu qiao, or overstaying aliens and residents who came from China via Hong Kong in the 1950s to 1980s, most of whom became citizens in the 1990s.Then there are the xin qiao – tourists, temporary visitors with fake papers, permanent residents or Philippine passport holders from the 1990s to the present day.Ang-See, however, said there was another reason to distinguish between them. “The Tsinoy are those born, raised and educated in the Philippines. Their first language is Filipino, then English, before they learned Hokkien and Mandarin; 90 per cent of them are Christians. They are rooted in Philippine soil and are fiercely loyal to the Philippine flag.”Historian Michael Charlston “Xiao” Chua, from De La Salle University in Manila, fits this description. The fourth-generation ethnic Chinese knows no Mandarin, studied in a Protestant school, has forgotten his Chinese name, and has no links to China.
Sangley (Intsik is the term coin by Hong Kong Cantonese referring to British Nationals 英籍 Ing-Jik, Sangley MestizoMestisong SangleyMestizo de Sangley or Chinese mestizo; plural: Sangleys or Sangleyes) is an archaic term used in the Philippines beginning in the Spanish Colonial Period to describe and classify a person of pure Chinese ancestry. The Spanish used the term mestizo de sangley to refer to a person of mixed Chinese and indigenous/Indio (Filipino) ancestry (the latter were referred to as Indio). The Chinese immigrants and their descendants played important roles in the Philippines, contributing to trade, culture and politics. Tsinoy (from the Spanish word Chino, and the word Pinoy) is also used to refer to a person of Chinese descent. The Chinese had entered the Philippines as traders prior to Spanish colonization. That development increased some work and business opportunities. Many emigrated to the Philippines, establishing concentrated communities first in Manila, then in other cities. Sangley is the romanisation of the word “常來” extract from the Boxer Codex Dasmarinas record to the King of Spain, it also contains the probable earliest romanisation of Japan as “Iapon”." The majority of Chinese sojourners, traders, and settlers in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period came from southern Fujian and spoke Hokkien, leaving their mark on Filipino culture (especially the cuisine). Although mestizo de sangley literally means "mixed-race (person) of business," it implies a "mixed-race (person) of Chinese and indigenous/Indio (Filipino) descent" because many early Chinese immigrants were traders and intermixed with the local population. Outside the Philippines, the Spanish word mestizo (without the qualifying de sangley) is normally used to refer to persons of mixed European and non-European ancestry, but the lower number of European mestizos in the Philippines made the term mestizo come to mean mestizo de sangley. For example, Benito Legarda used this definition when talking to the United States Philippine Commission (1899–1900), citing Wenceslao Retana's Diccionario de filipinismos (1921). The term chino mestizo was also used interchangeably with mestizo de sangley'
In 16th to 19th century Spanish Philippines, the term mestizo de sangley differentiated ethnic Chinese from other types of island mestizos (such as those of mixed Indio and Spanish ancestry, who were fewer in number. Their Indio ancestry (generally on the maternal side) made the Chinese mestizos be granted the legal status of colonial subjects of Spain, with certain rights and privileges denied to the pure-blooded Chinese immigrants (sangleys).Today, Tsinoy (from the word Tsino or Chino in Spanish, and the word Pinoy) is widely used to describe a Sangley, a person with similar features to a Chinese native, and a person born of Chinese descent.

The earlier contract states that Yang, identified in the document by his Chinese name Yang Hong Ming, is "contracted as Economic Adviser to the President for the period January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018."

The dispute over Yang’s role, meanwhile, began when it was reported last month his business card was adorned with the presidential seal, which by law can be used “exclusively to represent the president of the Philippines”. The back of the card, according to reports, identified Yang as the chairman of Full Win Company, an engineering firm also involved in real estate, finance and government procurement. The company’s website said Yang serves as the honorary president of the Philippines-China Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Philippines-China Friendship Foundation. The site said Yang officially reported to Malacanang on March 1.

  • Binondo is a district in Manila and is referred to as the city's Chinatown and is the world's oldest Chinatown. Its influence extends beyond to the places of QuiapoSanta CruzSan Nicolas. It is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594 by the Spaniards as a settlement near Intramuros but across the Pasig River for Catholic Chinese, it was positioned so that colonial rulers could keep a close eye on their migrant subjects. It was already a hub of Chinese commerce even before the Spanish colonial period. Binondo is the center of commerce and trade of Manila, where all types of business run by Filipino-Chinese thrive.Noted residents include St. Lorenzo Ruiz, the Filipino protomartyr, and Venerable Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, founder of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary. Numerous theories on the origin of the name "Binondo", and that of "Tondo", its neighboring district, have been put forward. Philippine National Artist Nick Joaquin suggested that the names might have been derived from the archaic spelling of the Tagalog term "binondoc" (modern orthography: binundók), or mountainous, referring to Binondo's originally hilly terrain. French linguist Jean-Paul Potet, however, has suggested that the river mangrove (Aegiceras corniculatum), which at the time was called "tundok" ("tinduk-tindukan" today), is the most likely origin of the term, with the 'Bi-" prefix in "Binondo" indicating Binondo's location relative to tondo.
Founded in 1594, Binondo was created by Spanish Governor Luis Pérez Dasmariñas as a permanent settlement for Chinese immigrants (the Spanish called the Chinese sangleys) who converted to Catholicism. It was across the river from the walled city of Intramuros, where the Spaniards resided. Originally it was intended to replace the Parian near Intramuros, where the Chinese were first confined. The Spanish gave a land grant for Binondo to a group of Chinese merchants and artisans in perpetuity, tax-free and with limited self-governing privileges.
The Spanish Dominican fathers made Binondo their parish and succeeded in converting many of the residents to Catholicism. Binondo soon became the place where Chinese immigrants converted to Catholicism, intermarried with indigenous Filipino women and had children, who became the Chinese mestizo community. Over the years, the Chinese mestizo population of Binondo grew rapidly. This was caused mainly because the lack of Chinese immigrant females and the Spanish officials' policy of expelling or killing (in conflicts) Chinese immigrants who refused to convert.

http://pdf.wenweipo.com/2018/05/03/a06-0503.pdf
