Nigeria, which is playing a lead role in efforts to deal with Mr Jammeh, has asked Britain to train 800 Nigerian troops as part of a joint force, said a source familiar with the matter. The president’s mandate expires at midnight on Wednesday. https://www.yahoo.com/news/gambia-crunch-talks-overshadowed-refugee-crisis-fears-161700233.html Mali's president called Saturday for Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh to step down and avoid an unnecessary "bloodbath" by clinging to power and forcing a potential military intervention. The Gambia's political crisis dominated a summit co-organised by Mali and France as Gambian president-elect Adama Barrow made a surprise appearance to meet with west African leaders seeking their help to end the impasse.

Commonwealth
- gambia was readmitted to the Commonwealth on Thursday, welcomed back following the democratic election of President Adama Barrow, who reversed a shock pullout in 2013. His predecessor Yahya Jammeh suddenly withdrew the impoverished west African nation in October that year, branding the group an "extension of colonialism" as he lashed out at international organisations.
Accused of flagrant rights abuses, Jammeh ruled mainland Africa's smallest country with an aura of mysticism and an iron fist after seizing power in 1994.

myanmar
- A coalition of ethnic organizations and human rights activists sent a letter to the UN’s Yangon office in support of Gambia’s genocide charges against Myanmar’s government and military. Gambia has accused Myanmar’s leaders of committing genocide against the country’s Rohingya minority. The first hearings in the case were heard this week at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
“We welcome the lawsuit filed by Gambia against the Burmese military leaders who are violating the Genocide Convention and those protecting the crimes of the military,” the leader read.It was signed by the Democracy and Peace Women’s Network, the Karen Women’s Union (KWU), the Ethnic Farmers Federation and Youth for a New Society. The group also mentioned in their letter similar human rights violations committed by the military against ethnic Kachin, Karen, Shan, Karenni, Rakhine and Mon civilians. https://myanmar-now.org/en/news/ethnic-groups-show-support-for-gambia-at-icj

China
-http://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-gambia-idUSKCN0WJ1DT China resumed ties with former Taiwan ally Gambia on Thursday, ending an unofficial diplomatic truce between China and Taiwan following January's landslide election of the leader of a pro-independence party as the self-ruled island's president. The small West African state was one of a few African countries, along with Burkina Faso, Swaziland and São Tomé and Príncipe, to recognize Taiwan, which China regards as a wayward province to be recovered by force if necessary. China and Taiwan had for years tried to poach each other's allies, often dangling generous aid packages in front of leaders of developing nations. But they began an unofficial diplomatic truce after signing a series of landmark trade and economic agreements in 2008 after the election of the China-friendly Ma Ying-jeou as Taiwan's president, as Beijing tried to convince Taiwan of its friendly intentions after decades of hostility and suspicion. While Gambia severed relations with Taiwan in November 2013, causing anger in Taipei, China had held off establishing formal ties with it until now.

  • China and Gambia signed seven documents to enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, finance and culture on Thursday during Gambian President Adama Barrow's state visit. Barrow is the first Gambian president to visit China since the two countries resumed ties last year. He is on a state visit to China that began on Wednesday and concludes on Monday at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. Signing of the agreements and memorandums of understandings were witnessed by Xi and Barrow at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two countries established formal diplomatic ties in 1974, but China suspended relations in 1995 when Gambia resumed "diplomatic" ties with Taiwan. Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks when meeting his Gambian counterpart Ousainou Darboe at the Foreign Ministry. Darboe is on a China visit from Monday to Sunday. It is his first official visit here after Gambian President Adama Barrow took office in January. He also met State Councilor Yang Jiechi, China's top diplomat, later on Tuesday.
