of our peasant European ancestors left little to no record, as they
were merely pawns utilized in by those above them in a feudal society. The
common man becomes more researchable after the Protestant Reformation
in the 16th century. The Counter (or Catholic) Reformation followed
thereafter. Both resulted in the keeping of records on a parish level
which was never required before. These records form the basis for
ancestral research in many European countries, so it is not uncommon to
trace your lineage to the 1500s.
