- A total of 59.8 percent of residents of Russia's single-industry towns consider their socio-economic situation to be unbearable or hardly bearable, the RBC newspaper reported Thursday, citing a poll by the Federal Guard Service (FSO). Only 3.9 percent of respondents said the socio-economic situation in their town was favorable and 31.3 percent told FSO the conditions in their town were normal. In addition to socio-economic conditions, respondents were asked to assess their own financial situation. According to the results, 5 percent of the residents of monotowns believe they are living below the poverty line and 37.7 percent consider themselves poor. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/560656.html

In less than a month, the first casino opens in a massive new gambling complex on the far end of Siberia. On a hill overlooking the Ussuri Bay barely 200km from the North Korean border sits Tigre de Cristal, a complex with 759 slot machines, dozens of roulette tables and a hotel. It is part of Russia’s latest desperate attempt to develop the country’s far east. A vast expanse of land stretching from Mongolia’s northern border all the way to the Bering Strait, the region is rich in resources but poor in people, and with even worse infrastructure than elsewhere inRussia. The new casino is one of dozens of investment projects Moscow hopes will change that. Here, as in other special zones, the government is offering investors streamlined approval procedures, visa exemptions and generous tax benefits. One of the world’s biggest gambling investors has already made his bet: Macao gambling tycoon Lawence Ho is the main investor behind Tigre de Cristal. “We are the biggest corporate investor in Primorsky Krai,” says Eric Landheer, director for corporate finance and strategy at Summit Ascent, Mr Ho’s investment holding. “We are investing $500m in the first phase, and our investment will eventually rise to $900m.” Although the location may seem like the end of the world to Europeans, it is may be a lucrative one from a gambling industry perspective. “We have more than 300m people living in a three-hour flight radius around here,” says Craig Ballantyne, the jovial Scotsman who runs Tigre de Cristal. “We expect Russians to account for 80 per cent of our business in terms of bodies, but Chinese to make up 80 per cent of the business in money terms,” he adds.

- The promyshlenniki (from Russian промысел (promysel), literally "a trade" or "business" or "industry") were Russian and indigenous Siberian contract workers drawn largely from the state serf and townsmanclass who engaged in the Siberian, maritime and later the Russian American fur trade.[1] Initially the Russians in Russian America were Siberian fur hunters, although many later worked as sailors, carpenters, artisans and craftsmen. Promyshlenniki formed the backbone of Russian trading operations in Alaska. By the early 1820s, when the share system was abandoned and replaced by salaries, their status remained in name only; they became employees of the Russian-American Company and their duties and activities became increasingly less involved in the fur-gathering activities of the Company.

- From the very beginning Pavlovsky Posad has had the textile industry as its main business. This industry is still the most prominent in modern town. During the 1990s, most textile factories were transformed into public corporations and went through bankruptcy. The public float index for these factories is currently^[when?] extremely low: about 90-95% of each factory's shares are owned by one person. The town has also always been famous for its shawl factories. One of these factories,Pavlovo-Posadkaya Manufaktura, is still producing traditional shawls and kerchiefs in the Russian style. Some other factories survived by concentrating on fire-equipment (such as fire hoses); whereas others yet are producing vestments for Orthodox priests.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917 the factory was renamed the State Porcelain Factory. Existing stocks of plates produced before the Revolution, but not yet decorated, were painted with the symbols and slogans of the new Soviet republic. This plate was made in 1901 under Tsar Nicholas II, but decorated in 1921. Many such plates were exported abroad, demonstrating how luxury objects from the Tsar's own factory could symbolize the overthrow of the capitalist system. This plate depicts a worker trampling the word 'Kapital' (capitalism), to release the dynamic forces of a new industrial order for the benefit of the workers. The plate was created to celebrate the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the creation of the world's first Communist state. The whole image is in the Futurist style favoured by the artists of the Revolution. It was designed by Mikhail Mikhailovich Adamovich (1884 - 1947) and created in the State Porcelain Factory in Petrograd, previously named St Petersburg.
