Gypsy

etymology, name in other languages

origin
- ******* https://www.quora.com/Are-Gypsies-descendants-of-Romans It is postulated that the Roma originated in the Punjab region of northern India as a nomadic people and entered Europe between the eighth and tenth centuries AD. Genetic analysis of 13 European Gypsy groups made in 2012 confirmed that their ancestors, for reasons not perfectly clear, left India in a single emigration wave some 1,500 or so years ago. They were called "Gypsies" because Europeans mistakenly believed they came from Egypt. This minority is made up of distinct groups called "tribes" or "nations." The Romani are widely known among English-speaking people by the exonym Gypsies or Gypsys, which is considered to be pejorative due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity. Most of the Roma in Germany and the countries occupied by Germany during World War II belonged to the Sinti and Roma family groupings. Both groups spoke dialects of a common language called Romani, based on Sanskrit (the classical language of India). The term "Roma" has come to include both the Sinti and Roma groupings, though some Roma prefer being known as "Gypsies." Some Roma are Christian and some are Muslim, having converted during the course of their migrations through Persia, Asia Minor, and the Balkans. The words “Rom” and “Romani” have nothing to do with the word “Rome.” That is simply a coincidence. “Rom” means man or husband in the Romani language. It has the variants dom and lom, related with the Sanskrit words dam-pati (lord of the house, husband), dama (to subdue), lom (hair), lomaka (hairy), loman, roman (hairy), romaça (man with beard and long hair).
Another possible origin is from Sanskrit डोम doma(member of a low caste of travelling musicians and dancers).

language
- *********“more” means “man” in the sense of “human” in romani (gypsy). apart from its original meaning, romani speakers often use it as an interjection at the end of a sentence: more! just like english speaking do with “man!”. so the romani “more” means the same in this interjective function as more, bre, vre, re in greek or in some variations in turkish and other nearby spoken languages. as the balkans, greece and turkey have been important stations and habitats for gypsies on their way from india and egypt, it might be that this is a loanword from romani. https://www.quora.com/My-Greek-speaking-father-used-to-call-me-moray-What-does-it-mean comments section

- [NATS] in latter half of 20thc ireland, the work of the song collector tom munnelly (1944-2007) paved the way for acknowledgement of another aspect of english-language song tradition, that of irish travellers. Irish travellers, as bearers of an older style of preliterate traditional song repertoire, are a historically nomadic ethnocultural group with a distinct and unique culture. The term "irish traveller" is the politically correct one. Terms like roma, gypsy, and so on are sometimes used to describe irish travellers, but these terms are problematic and carry a negative connotation.

France
-French Romani people are generally known in spoken French as "Gitans", "Tsiganes" or "Manouches".The Romani people originate from the Northern India, presumably from the northwestern Indian states Rajasthan and Punjab.[10] The linguistic evidence has indisputably shown that roots of Romani language lie in India: the language has grammatical characteristics of Indian languages and shares with them a big part of the basic lexicon, for example, body parts or daily routines.[11]More exactly, Romani shares the basic lexicon with Hindi and Punjabi. It shares many phonetic features with Marwari, while its grammar is closest to Bengali.[12] Genetic findings in 2012 suggest the Romani originated in northwestern India and migrated as a group.[3][4][13] According to a genetic study in 2012, the ancestors of present scheduled tribes and scheduled caste populations of northern India, traditionally referred to collectively as the Ḍoma, are the likely ancestral populations of modern European Roma.[14] The French typically classify the Romani in their country into three groups: "Roms," referring to Romani who come from territories from eastern Europe; "Manouches," also known as "Sinté," who often have familial ties in Germany and Italy; and "Gitans," who trace their familial ties to Romani in Spain.[15] The term "Romanichel" is consideredpejorative[citation needed], and "Bohémien" is outdated. The French National Gendarmerie tends to refer to "MENS" ("Minorités Ethniques Non-Sédentarisées"), a neutraladministrative term meaning "Travelling Ethnic Minorities". Approximately 400,000 Romani live in France as part of established communities. Additionally, the French Romani rights group FNASAT reports that at least 12,000 Romani, who have illegally immigrated from Romania and Bulgaria, live in unofficial urban camps throughout the country. French authorities often close down these encampments. In 2009, the government sent more than 10,000 Romani back to Romania and Bulgaria.[16] In 2009, the European Committee of Social Rights found France had violated the European Social Charter (rights to housing, right to protection against poverty and social exclusion, right of the family to protection) in respect to its Romani population.

Italy’s hardline new interior minister has promised to take a census of Gypsies and said he regrets he cannot expel them from Italy. Matteo Salvini, head of the anti-migrant League party, has won notoriety in Europe for preventing the arrival in Italy of the Aquarius rescue ship, which was carrying 629 migrants, forcing it to dock in Spain. He said yesterday that he would create a register of Roma or Gypsy people in Italy. “I’ve asked the ministry to prepare a dossier on the Roma question in Italy,” he told TeleLombardia, adding that the current situation was “chaos”. He then switched to discuss his plans to expel migrants jailed in Italy, before stating: “Unfortunately you need to keep Italian Roma in Italy.”

The Gipsy Kings are a group of flamencosalsa and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier in the south of France who perform in a mixture of languages, mostly in Spanish, but also mixing dialects from the South of France.[1] Although group members were born in France, their parents were mostly gitanos, Spanish Romani who fled Spain during the 1930s Spanish Civil War. "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" is a song by American singer and actress Cher for her seventh solo studio album Chér (eventually reissued under the title Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves) (1971). It was released on September 1, 1971, by Kapp Records as the album's lead single. The song was written by Bob Stone, and produced by Snuff Garrett. Since Sonny Bono's first attempts at reviving Cher's recording career had been unsuccessful, Kapp Records recruited Garrett as her producer and he chose Stone to write a song specifically for Cher, in order to cater more to an adult audience.
