Government
The Ministry of Defence (MāoriManatū Kaupapa Waonga) is the public service department of New Zealand charged with advising the government on defence policy, as well as overseeing the New Zealand Defence ForceThe Defence Act, passed on 17 November 1964, established a new Ministry of Defence. Under the Act the three Service departments were combined into the new Ministry. The central core of the new Ministry of Defence was the central Defence Office.

  • https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12084397Mark recounted the story today during the launch of the Strategic Defence Policy Statement which has highlighted climate change as a challenge for the Defence Force. The Defence document is also unusually explicitly critical of China for a New Zealand policy statement. The paper says that as China had integrated into the international order, it had not consistently adopted the governance and values championed by the order's traditional leaders."Both domestically and as a basis for international engagement, China holds views on human rights and freedom of information that stand in contrast to those that prevail in New Zealand."It says China has set an alternative model of development - a liberalising economy without liberal democracy – challenging conventional wisdom in the West that the two go hand-in-hand.Ron Mark equated its frankness on China to its nuclear-free position and being the first country to give women the vote, rather than it being a "pick-on-China moment".

- Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB)
  • A new inquiry into NZ's electronic surveillance service is being started as the country's intelligence watchdog tries to find out if it makes good decisions about who to spy on, and how it stays politically neutral. The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, Cheryl Gwyn, linked the inquiry to claims the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) spied on foreign diplomats competing against Trade Minister Tim Groser to lead the World Trade Organisation. But she said it was unlikely she would be able to probe the allegations. Instead, she said, the inquiry would study the way the GCSB chose its targets, what its decision-making process was and how it stuck to its duty to be neutral in cases where there might be political advantage. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11448877

Otago (/əˈtɑːɡ-, ɒ-/; New Zealand [əˈtɐːɡɐʉ̯] ) is a region of New Zealand in the south of the South Island administered by the Otago Regional CouncilThe name "Otago" is an old Māori southern dialect word (the North Island dialect equivalent is "Otakou"), introduced to the south by Europeans in the 1840s. The exact meaning of the term is disputed, with common translations being "isolated village" and "place of red earth", the latter referring to the reddish-ochre clay which is common in the area around Dunedin. "Otago" is also the old name of the European settlement on the Otago Harbour, established by the Weller Brothers in 1831, which lies close to the modern harbourside community of Otakou. The place later became the focus of the Otago Association, an offshoot of the Free Church of Scotland, notable for its high-minded adoption of the principle that ordinary people, not the landowner, should choose the ministers.

The Whanganui River is a major river in the North Island of New Zealand. It is the country's third-longest river, and has special status owing to its importance to the region's Māori people. In March 2017 it became the world's first natural resource to be given its own legal identity, with the rights, duties and liabilities of a legal personIn 1912–13 the French filmmaker Gaston Méliès shot a (now lost) documentary film The River Wanganui about the river, calling it the Rhine of New ZealandThe settlement of Jerusalem is of particular note. Jerusalem was home to two famous New Zealanders, Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, whose Catholic mission is still located at Jerusalem, and New Zealand poet James K. Baxter, who established a commune at the settlement in 1970.

outlying islands
- The Chatham Islands form an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean east of the South Island of New Zealand. The archipelago consists of about ten islands , the largest of which are Chatham Island and Pitt Island. Some of these islands, formerly cleared for farming, are now preserved asnature reserves to conserve some of the unique flora and fauna. As of 2013 the islands had a resident population of 600. The local economy depends largely on conservation, tourism, farming, and fishing. The archipelago is called Rēkohu ("Misty Sun") in the indigenous Moriori language, and Wharekauri in Māori. The Moriori people, indigenous to the Chatham Islands, arrived around 1500 and developed a peaceful way of life. In 1835 members of the Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama Māori iwi from the North Island of New Zealand invaded the islands and nearly exterminated the Moriori, enslaving the survivors. The Chatham Islands officially became part of the Colony of New Zealand in 1842; in 1863 the resident magistrate declared the Moriori released from slavery. The Chatham Islands include New Zealand's easternmost point, the Forty-FoursWaitangi is the main port and settlement. The Chatham Islands Council provides local administration – its powers resemble those of New Zealand's other unitary authorities. The islands constitutionally make up part of the New Zealand Outlying Islands, meaning they are an immediate part of New Zealand, but do not belong to any region or district. Instead, they form an Area Outside Territorial Authority, like all other outlying islands apart from the Solander Islands.
https://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/china_world/20191210/00180_003.html

  • Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in AucklandNew Zealand, for thoroughbredracehorses. Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874.[1] At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage. A "platform" station, Ellerslie Racecourse Platform was opened in January 1874. Many went by train, although with the demand created by the event, as late as in 1910 they often had to travel in open cattle trucks because there were not enough normal coaches available for the demand of the extra services.

people
-  Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld GCMG (9 May 1823 – 20 July 1891), was a New Zealand politician and a governor of various British colonies. He was the sixth Premier of New Zealand, and later served as Governor of Western AustraliaGovernor of Tasmania, and Governor of the Straits Settlements. Weld was born near BridportDorset, England, on 9 May 1823. His mother, Christina Maria Clifford, was the daughter of Baron Clifford of Chudleigh. Both of his parents were from old recusant Catholic families. His father, Humphrey Weld of Chideock, was a member of the Weld-Blundell family. Humphrey's brother Thomas was founder of the Jesuit college at Stonyhurst. Weld's upbringing was strongly grounded in the Catholic faith. His early years were spent with his parents in France. Later, he received a good education, studying at Stonyhurst before attending the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, where he studied philosophychemistrylanguages and law. He had originally intended to pursue a military career, but was convinced otherwise by his tutor at Fribourg. He instead decided to seek a career in the colonies, and arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, on 22 April 1844. In New Zealand, he entered a partnership with his cousin, Sir Charles Clifford, 1st Baronet of Flaxbourne. The two established a number of sheep stations around the country, and Weld became relatively prosperous. Weld found a life of agricultural management to be too mundane, however, and soon became active in political concerns. One of his more significant campaigns was to ward against any potential discrimination against Catholics in New Zealand. He later became active in lobbying for representative government in New Zealand. In 1848, Weld declined an offer by the governor, Sir George Grey, of a seat on a proposed nominee council. In 1852 he visited England, where he published a pamphlet, Hints to Intending Sheep Farmers in New Zealand, which ran into three editions.
  •  In 1880, Sir Frederick Weld arrived in the Straits Settlements. He began to take personal interest in the development of the Malay States. In the middle of 1881, Weld visited the town of Taiping, in Perak. He found "the revenue increasing and everything going on excellent well..." but "labour for public works and roads and to develop other industries and sources of revenue besides tin-mining," he lamented, "is the great want". he also reported that: "Water supply for Taiping from the hill (Maxwell Hill), the roads to Krian, which will connect Taiping town centre with Province Wellesley, and a rail and tramway from Taiping to the port (Port Weld, which was named after him) are amongst the next most necessary works to be undertaken. the town of Taiping has been much improved since the fire, which took place rather more than a year ago; new streets have been laid out to considerable width, and a better class of houses has been built" The construction of the Taiping - Port Weld railway was the beginning of a major transformation altering radically the landscape of the Malay Peninsula. It also brought the first influx of Indians (mainly Tamils) and Ceylonese to Perak.
William Ball Sutch (27 June 1907 – 28 September 1975) was a New Zealand economist, historian, writer, public servant, public intellectual and Soviet spy. In 1974, he was charged with trying to pass New Zealand Government information to the Soviet Union. He was acquitted, an outcome that was the subject of much debate since then. Subsequently disclosures from the KGB confirmed he was spying for the Soviet Union, although his daughter continues to dispute this.
  •  Upon returning to New Zealand in 1951, Sutch worked for the Department of Industries and Commerce, eventually in 1958 rising to be its Secretary. There he promoted the development of the New Zealand economy using the policy instruments of the day, including price controls, subsidies and import controls. He concluded that pastoral exports by themselves would not generate enough foreign exchange to maintain full employment, and would continue to make the economy highly vulnerable to fluctuations in international conditions. So he sought import substitution, the further processing of agricultural production for export, and the exporting of non-pastoral agricultural exports, manufacturing and services (such as tourism). As such he foresaw, championed and laid the foundations of the great export diversifications of the 1970s.[citation needed] Sutch's promotion of industrialisation was anathema to much of the farming community, though many in the business community supported him. In March 1965 he was forced to retire after 40 years of public service employment and at the age of 57 he became a consultant. Among his many further publications were the books, Colony or Nation? The Responsible Society in New ZealandTakeover New Zealand, and Women with a Cause. His festschriftSpirit of an Age, was published in 1975. Sutch became active in the arts and architectural communities, including the Wellington Architectural Centre. He was an early and active promoter of New Zealand design, asserting that quality design was central to economic and social development. He helped to set up the Wellington Architectural Centre, provided the intellectual framework that led to the formation of the New Zealand Industrial Design Council and chaired the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council (now Creative New Zealand).
Sir Edmund Percival "EdHillary KG ONZ KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and NepaleseSherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John HuntTIME magazine named Hillary one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.Prior to the 1953 Everest expedition, Hillary had been part of the British reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951 as well as an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest. Following his ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts, many schools and hospitals were built in Nepal.Hillary was born to Percival Augustus and Gertrude (née Clark) Hillary in Auckland, New Zealand, on 20 July 1919. His family moved to Tuakau (south of Auckland) in 1920, after his father, who served at Gallipoli in the 15th (North Auckland) Regiment, was allocated land there.
Sir Robert David Muldoon GCMG CH PC (/mʌlˈdun/; 25 September 1921 – 5 August 1992), also known as Rob Muldoon, was a New Zealand politician who served as the 31st Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1975 to 1984, as Leader of the National PartyServing as a corporal and sergeant in the army in the Second World War,[1] Muldoon completed his training as an accountant and returned to New Zealand as its first fully qualified cost accountant. He was first elected to the House of Representatives at the 1960 general election as the Member of Parliament for Tamaki. Muldoon served successively as Minister of Tourism (1967), Minister of Finance (1967–1972), Deputy Prime Minister (1972), and Leader of the Opposition (1974–1975). He soon led the National Party to a decisive victory in the 1975 general electionMuldoon came to power promising to lead "a Government of the ordinary bloke."[2] He appointed himself Minister of Finance. His tenure as Prime Minister was plagued by an economic pattern of stagnation, high inflation, growing unemployment, and high external debts and borrowing. Economic policies of the Muldoon Government included national superannuation, wage and price freezes, industrial incentives, and the 'Think Big' industrial projects. In foreign policy, Muldoon adopted an anti-Soviet stance, and re-emphasised New Zealand's defence commitments to the United States and Australia under the ANZUS pact. His refusal to stop a Springbok rugby tour of New Zealanddivided the country and led to unprecedented civil disorder in 1981. Muldoon led his party to two additional election victories in 1978 and 1981. He called a snap election in 1984, in which National suffered a significant defeat to Labour. Shortly before leaving office, amid a constitutional crisis, Muldoon was forced by the incoming Government to devalue the New Zealand dollar. In 1984, he was only the second Prime Minister (after Sir Keith Holyoake) to receive a knighthood while still in office. Muldoon was a polarising figure and has been variously described as a "bully",[3] an "enigma,"[4] and "a strong believer in the battler, the little man, the ordinary citizen and his or her rights."

  • according to scmp 25may18, a news article dated 23may1978 reported Muldoon's answer to opium problem in thailand - send lily seeds from his own garden to the country

Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern (born 26 July 1980) is a New Zealand politician who has been the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition since 1 August 2017. She was first elected to parliament as a list MP at the 2008 general election. She has been the MP for Mount Albert since 8 March 2017. Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, Ardern grew up in Morrinsville and Murupara, where her father, Ross Ardern, worked as a police officer. She attended the University of Waikato, graduating in 2001 with a Bachelor of Communication Studies (BCS) in politics and public relations. • John Plimmer (28 June 1812 – 5 January 1905) was an English settler and entrepreneur in New Zealand who has been called the "Father of Wellington".Plimmer was born at a village called in contemporary accounts "Upton-under-Amon" near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England on 28 June 1812, youngest but one of 12 children of Isaac Plimmer, builder and timber merchant, and his wife Mary (nee Roden). He arrived at Wellington from England on the ship Gertrude in 1841. As an entrepreneur in 1851 he purchased the stranded whaling ship Inconstant and converted the hull into a warehouse and one of the first piers in Wellington. It became known as "Plimmer's Ark", a centre of business in early Wellington, used as an auction house, customs office and lighthouse. He was a member of the Wellington Provincial Council from 1856 to 1857, the first Wellington Town Board (1863) and was on the Wellington City Council from 1870 to 1871. His principal public service was the organisation of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company between 1880 and 1886.

His father was Paratene Ngata, a tribal leader and expert in traditional lore, and his mother was Katerina Naki, the daughter of an itinerant Scot, Abel Knox.[2] Ngata was greatly influenced both by his father and by his great-uncle Ropata Wahawaha (who had led loyal kupapa Ngāti Porou forces against their Pai Mārire enemy (commonly known as Hauhau) in the East Cape War and later Te Kooti's escapees from the Chatham Islands).[3] Ngata was raised in a Māori environment, speaking the Māori language, but his father also ensured that Ngata learnt about the Pākehā world, believing that this understanding would be of benefit to Ngāti Porou.

History
New Zealand was not colonised by conquest. In pre-colonial times NZ was a hotbed of tribal warfare. Slavery, killing and cannibalism were rife among the tribes. Early traders introduced rum and muskets and took smoked human heads, flax and sex in exchange. The trading settlement at Kororareka (nowadays Russell) in the Bay of Islands, became known as the “Hell hole of the Pacific”. Under the influence of early missionaries who introduced European crops, trees, animals and farming methods, many Maori realised that there was a greater world out there. Around 1820, one prominent chief, Hongi Hika, travelled to London and actually met King George IV. He also studied British governance and ‘cottoned on’ to the idea of ‘One Country, One King’. No prizes for guessing who the King would be. George showered Hongi with presents, including muskets and a suit of armour. On his trip home, the ship visited Sydney and Hongi traded all his presents except the muskets and armour for more muskets and gunpowder. Hongi’s tribe, the Ngapuhi, the northern-most in NZ, were already one of the most powerful and armed with muskets, set about conquering everyone they could. Hongi styled himself “the Napoleon of the North.” He was fairly successful, until during a battle , he was wearing only the breastplate of the armour and a musket ball struck him in the back, killing him. By this time the “musket wars” as they are known, were widespread and killing, to settle ancient scores, was on an unprecedented scale. Many thousands died. By the late 1830’s the missionaries had persuaded many tribes that their only hope of survival was to join the British Empire, for protection. After some negotiation, the British Government, who didn’t really want the cost of another colony in that vicinity (they already had several in Australia) were persuaded to accept Maori into the Empire as British Subjects. On February 6, 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, between leading tribal chieftains and Capt. William Hobson RN as the Queens Representative and New Zealand became a colony within the British Empire. Slavery and cannibalism were outlawed. (Queen Victoria was not amused by such goings-on.) So, the colonisation of NZ differed from the rest of the world in that Maori asked for permission to join the Empire and under the Treaty of Waitangi were guaranteed equal citizenship as subjects of Queen Victoria. Ultimately, by the 1860’s some dirty work by crooked businessmen and corrupt politicians, backed up by troops, saw many tribes stripped of some land, which they did not take lying down and a series of ‘land wars’ ensued for a decade or so. Ultimately, peace was enforced, but the losses of land rankled within Maoridom and it wasn’t until a protest movement persuaded the Government of the day, in the 1980’s to redress these matters under the “Treaty of Waitangi Commission” and compensation is still on-going today. To the best of my knowledge, Maori seeking colonisation in the British Empire was unique in the era of colonisation, and the modern day Governmental redressing of colonial misdeeds and land seizures, is also unique in the world.https://www.quora.com/Why-was-the-colonization-of-New-Zealand-so-different-from-the-rest-of-the-New-World
The Treaty of Waitangi (MāoriTe Tiriti o Waitangi) is a treaty first signed on 6 February 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and Māori chiefs (rangatira) from the North Island of New Zealand. It has become a document of central importance to the history, to the political constitution of the state, and to the national mythos of New Zealand, and has played a major role in framing the political relations between New Zealand's government and the Māori population, especially from the late-20th century. The Treaty was written at a time when the New Zealand Company, acting on behalf of large numbers of settlers and would-be settlers, were establishing a colony in New Zealand, and when some Māori leaders had petitioned the British for protection against French incursions. It was drafted with the intention of establishing a British Governor of New Zealand, recognising Māori ownership of their lands, forests and other possessions, and giving Māori the rights of British subjects. It was intended by the British Crown to ensure that when Lieutenant Governor William Hobson subsequently made the declaration of British sovereignty over New Zealand.

Auckland City Police's Inspector Joe Tipene, who oversees Maori, Pacific and ethnic services, said the attacks were worrying and arrests were made in two of the cases. No further arrests have been made today in relation to the attacks but police said this evening they were following very positive lines of enquiry in both the Oakley Creek incident and the Albert Park incidents.

https://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/china_world/20200229/00180_034.html

Seeds were brought across the Pacific to New Zealand in the early 20th century by Isabel Fraser, principal of Wanganui Girls' College, who had been visiting missionary schools in China. They were planted by a local nurseryman and the vines first fruited in 1910. People thought the fruit had a gooseberry flavor and began to call it the "Chinese gooseberry."The FTA has created mutually beneficial concessions in the trade of goods, services and investment, including lowering of tariffs for fruits. For example, on kiwifruit, China started to gradually lower its 20 percent tariff since 2008 at a rate of about 2 percent each year, before it became tariff-free in 2016.
