  • The Social Development Network (SDN), formerly known as "Social Development Unit" (SDU), is a governmental body under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports ofSingapore (now the Ministry of Social and Family Development), which works closely with the community and commercial sectors to foster opportunities for singles to interact in social settings in Singapore. Besides coordinating and facilitating dating activities offered by the private sector, it also serves to educate the public on singlehood issues. Other responsibilities of the SDN include providing the necessary infrastructure and support for the dating industry, as well as to ensure the professionalism of dating agencies through anaccreditation council that was formed in 2007. SDN’s role in the industry has not always been that of facilitating and accrediting. When it was first established in 1984 as SDU, it functioned on its own, organising activities for its members without the help of commercial agencies. It was only in 2006 that the then SDU decided on a major change in approach: it let the private sector be the main provider of matchmaking and dating services, focusing instead on accrediting and funding private dating agencies and projects. This was done in the hopes of creating a more vibrant dating scene and of allowing singles to have more options to interact with others of different educational levels.

Geylang (芽笼Tamilகேலாங்) is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west. Geylang is known perhaps most infamously as a red-light district, particularly the areas along Geylang Road. Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is.The word Geylang is found early in Singapore's history and also in early topographical maps showing marsh and coconut plantations beside and adjacent to the mouth of the Kallang River, home to the Orang Laut (sea gypsies). One possible etymological link in the stock vocabulary of the Malay is geylanggan meaning to "twist" or "crush" a reference to the process of extracting the coconut meat and milk used by the locals to thicken curries in Malay-Chinese (Peranakan) cuisine. The word Geylang may be derived from a corrupted spelling of the Malay word gelang which is a type of edible creeper (Portulaca oleracea). This is a more plausible explanation for the name because Malays typically name places based on the abundance of certain plant species (e.g. Melaka after the tree species of the same name) or geological formations (e.g. Bukit Gombak based on the comb-like hill summit).
- One of the distinctive hallmarks of Geylang architecture is the preservation of its shophouses used by the clan (kinship) associations, set up as a (first) point of contact for newcomers in the migrant wave between 1840 and 1940 for the purpose of integrating the newcomers into the ways and customs of locals. At present the Geylang neighbourhood accurately reflects demographic changes in Singapore (2011) where out of every four Singaporeans, one is a foreigner (Goh, Mar 2011 paper on PRC Immigrants', Social Work Dept, National University of Singapore). As a strategic and military outpost for the British, the sea lanes off the Straits of Malacca were important to be kept free from pirates and open for shipping. As the British expanded in influence and power, so Singapore stood in the gap between East and West interests as a natural deep-harbour destination that played host to the French, Portuguese, Dutch and other European navies and their men. Other seaports in Asia, from Shanghai to Calcutta, also played a role in the traffic of women and girls for prostitution. James Francis Warren has studied the death (coroner's) reports in that colonial era that attest to the lives of the Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka and other dialect groups cast out of the Chinese mainland due to famine and abject poverty. His research tells the story of illiterate Chinese migrants working as coolies and rickshaw pullers and gives a description of what life might have been for the poorest of the poor living in Singapore under the British and immediately before the Japanese Occupation. In his 2008 edition of Pirates, Prostitutes & Pullers, the author traces the roots of prostitution in Singapore and gives an explanation of the eastward shift of Singapore's red-light district from Chinatown that was east of the Singapore river, toward the Hylam Street–Beach Road locality where many Chinese, Japanese and European girls were pimped, and finally across the Kallang river to its present location. Warren's research describes the ethno-social background of prostitutes: young men and women who came to Singapore a hundred years ago, having little or no education, who could not converse, read or write in English and resorted to any and all means to survive the ravages of war, hunger and privation back in the country of origin.

Kovan (Chinese高文pinyinGāo Wén) is a neighbourhood located within the town of Hougang, in the North-East Region of Singapore. Kovan was traditionally an area associated with the Teochew community. A number of road names at Kovan commemorate the more prominent members of this community. Kovan's Teochew name is "La gou jio", which means six miles from the Fullerton Hotel. The neighbourhood today, largely consists of private housing properties, where a majority of the residents live in terrace homes, semi-detached and bungalows.Kovan is part of Aljunied GRC, and is located within the constituency's Paya Lebar division. Kusu Island is one of the Southern Islands in Singapore, located about 5.6 kilometres (3.5 miles) to the south of the main island of Singapore and below the Singapore Straits. "Kusu" means "Tortoise Island" or "Turtle Island" in Hokkien; the island is also known as Peak Island or Pulau Tembakul in Malay. The word kusu also means flatulence in Tamil, one of Singapore's official languages—however, this is in no way related to the name of the island, and is a misconception.

  • The Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA) was formed on 17 August 1900 to advance the interests and welfare of the Straits-born Chinese community (also known as the Peranakans) in Singapore as well as to promote their allegiance to the British Crown.[1] Unlike the China-born Chinese who hailed mainly from the various southern provinces of China, the Straits Chinese were defined as those born or living in the Straits Settlements and whose loyalty was towards the British Crown.[2] One of the original objectives of the association was to promote among its members “an intelligent interest in the affairs of the British Empire, and to encourage and maintain their loyalty as subjects of the Queen”. The founding members of the SCBA were prominent Straits-born Chinese, some of whom were educated in Britain. These included influential personalities such as Seah Liang Seah, Lim Boon Keng, Song Ong Siang and Tan Jiak Kim, who was the first president of the association. The majority of the initial 800 members were drawn from the Chinese Philomathic Society of Singapore, which was established in 1896 to address political and social issues of concern to the Straits-born Chinese. To demonstrate its allegiance to the British, one of the first achievements of the SCBA was the formation of a Straits-Chinese company in the Singapore Volunteer Infantry in 1901 for the purpose of local defence.During World War I, SCBA leaders donated funds and even purchased warplanes to aid the British war effort.[6] In addition, they sat on school committees to improve English education in schools and donated money for the establishment of the King Edward VII Medical School in 1905. SCBA members were also active in social work. For instance, Lim Boon Keng launched a campaign against opium smoking in 1906. Shortly after the SCBA was established in Singapore, a branch was set up in Malacca in October 1900 followed by a Penang branch in 1920.[8] The SCBA changed its name to the Singapore Chinese Peranakan Association in 1964 and again in March 1966 when it was renamed The Peranakan Association.

Keppel Corporation (also known as Keppel Corp) is a Singaporean conglomerateheadquartered in Keppel Bay Tower, HarbourFront. The company consists of several affiliated businesses that specialises in offshore & marine, property, infrastructure and asset management businesses. The company was founded in 1968 as Keppel Shipyard at the Keppel Harboursituated in Tanjong Pagar before moving its operations to Jurong, where the company focused on offshore and marine activities. Notable Keppel subsidiaries include Keppel Offshore & Marine (world's largest oil rig builder) and Keppel Land (world's 2nd most sustainable diversified real estate developer). The name of the company Keppel was derived from a British ship captain, Captain Henry Keppel, who discovered a natural, deepwater harbour (the Keppel Harbour) in Tanjong Pagar in 1848. The harbour was previously known as New Harbour until 1900 when the acting governor of Singapore, Sir Alexander Swettenham, renamed the harbour to Keppel Harbour in the honour of Captain Henry Keppel when he visited Singapore in 1900. In 1968, Temasek Holdings founded Keppel Shipyard when Keppel Harbour was taken over from the British Royal Navy after it withdrew from the island. In the 1970s and 1980s, Keppel Corporation focused on diversification within the company and regionalisation with the first overseas venture in 1975, Keppel Philippines Shipyard was set up in partnership with Filipino investors, with head offices in Cebu and Manila. In 1978, Keppel then ventured into the finance industry by providing financial services to marine contractors under Shin Loong Credit (renamed Shin Loong Finance) which propelled the growth and expansion of the financial services provided by Keppel. Keppel then ventured into the property market in 1983 after acquiring Straits Steamship Company, an established shipping company with substantial land holdings in Singapore. The Straits Steamship Company was then renamed to Straits Steamship Land (now known as Keppel Land) to focus on the property market. In 1990, with the acquisition of Asia Commercial Bank, Keppel Corporation established banking and financial services as a major pillar of growth for the company and in 1997 Keppel Bank acquired Tat Lee Bank, resulting in an enlarged bank called Keppel TatLee Bank to expand its services in the banking industry. In 1999, Keppel Shipyard (now known as Keppel Offshore & Marine group) moved its operations base from Keppel Harbour to Jurong to expand Keppel Corporation's offshore and marine operations in yards around Tuas, Gul and Benoi, which were close to one another and also to develop the land which Keppel Harbour was situated on into waterfront residential area.

The Anglo-Chinese School (ACS), is a family of Methodist schools in Singapore and Indonesia founded in 1886 by Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham as an extension of the Methodist Church. Anglo-Chinese School is usually abbreviated as "ACS," with the Anglo-Chinese Junior College abbreviated as "ACJC." Its students and alumni are referred as "ACSians" (/ˈɑksiɑn/). ACS was the first school in Singapore to have a flower named after it, the "Ascocenda Anglo-Chinese School orchid", a hybrid created by the school to mark its 116th Founder's Day on March 1, 2002.Founded on March 1, 1886 by Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham as an extension of the Methodist Church,[2][3] the school's first location was a shophouse at 70 Amoy Street, Singapore with a total of 13 pupils. The name of the school came from it conducting lessons in English at night and Chinese in the afternoon. By the following year, enrollment had increased to 104 and the school moved to Coleman Street. Between 1914 and 1920, under the leadership of the Reverend J. S. Nagle, the school introduced regular religious (or "chapel") services and physical education classes. Afternoon classes were started for academically weak pupils. In a bid to ensure continuity in school life and keep the school adequately staffed, Nagle encouraged ex-students, known as "old boys", to join the school as teachers. To this day, the Anglo-Chinese School Old Boys' Association is a link through which many "old boys" continue to maintain close ties with the school.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is an autonomous research university in Singapore. Founded in 1905 as the King Edward VII College of Medicine, NUS is the oldest higher education institution in Singapore. In September 1904, Tan Jiak Kim led a group of representatives of the Chinese and other non-European communities and petitioned the Governor of the Straits SettlementsSir John Anderson, to establish a medical school in Singapore. Tan, who was the first president of the Straits Chinese British Association, managed to raise 87,077 Straits dollars, of which the largest amount of $12,000 came from himself.[citation needed] On 3 July 1905, the medical school was founded and was known as the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School.Raffles College was merged with King Edward VII College of Medicine to form University of Malaya on 8 October 1949. The two institutions were merged to provide for the higher education needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore. The growth of University of Malaya was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and resulted in the setting up of two autonomous divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1955, Nanyang University  (abbreviated Nantah, 南大) was established on the backdrop of the Chinese community in Singapore. In 1960, the governments of then Federation of Malaya and Singapore indicated their desire to change the status of the divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961, establishing the former Kuala Lumpur division as the University of Malaya, while the Singapore division was renamed the University of Singapore on 1 January 1962.

  • https://www.pwc.com/sg/en/asset-management/assets/svacc/svcc-comparatives-201908.pdf On 10 September 2018, the Monetary Authority of Singapore announced that the VCC Act was tabled in Singapore Parliament.  The new fund structure seeks to introduce in the Lion City, fund structures which are common across other established global fund centres like Luxembourg, Ireland and Mauritius, among others. In comparison, the governance framework of Singapore VCC is on par with other fund centres. VCC only requires one locally resident director. In addition, it does not mandate the need for “independent” directors for alternative funds marketed to non-retail investors. VCC legislation does require representation of at least one director or a qualified representative of the fund management company on the board of the VCC. This is comparable to other on-shore jurisdictions such as Ireland and Luxembourg, where regulators encourage the “promoter” of the fund to have representation on the board of the fund. The Irish fund law does not compel independence of directors but the corporate governance code requires at least one independent director. Similar is the case of Luxembourg, which encourages independence rather than a statutory requirement.

https://hk.finance.appledaily.com/finance/daily/article/20171120/20219614

  • Singapore's vision is to be the Biopolis of Asia, a leading international biomedical sciences cluster advancing human health, through the pursuit of excellence in research and development, manufacturing and healthcare delivery. To achieve this, Singapore has built up world-class capabilities across the entire value chain from drug discovery, development and clinical research, to manufacturing and healthcare delivery. In the year 2000, Singapore's Biomedical Sciences (BMS) initiative was launched to establish a focused effort on the development of this sector as the fourth pillar of Singapore's industry cluster, alongside electronics, chemicals and engineering. The BMS initiative covers the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Medical Engineering and Technology and Healthcare Services industries. An integrated strategy was adopted for the development of the BMS sector, focusing on Human Capital, Intellectual Capital and Industrial Capital, or 3 Cs in short. The first phase of the BMS initiative (2000–2005) put in place key building blocks by establishing core capabilities in biomedical research, and introducing important human capital and industrial capital development initiatives. For the next phase (2006–2010), we will build on this foundation and strengthen our capabilities in translational and clinical research to bring discoveries from the bench to the bedside and the marketplace, and ultimately improve human healthcare.Singapore offers unlimited opportunities for Biomedical Sciences (BMS) companies. Strong government support and a pro-business environment have attracted industry leaders such as Abbott, Aventis, Affymetrix, Baxter, Becton-Dickinson, Eli Lilly, Genentech, GlaxoSmithKline, Lonza, Merck & Co, Novartis, Pfizer, Schering-Plough, Siemens and Wyeth to Singapore for manufacturing and R&D activities. The three groups that are involved in Singapore's BMS initiative are the Biomedical Sciences Group (BMSG) of the Economic Development Board (EDB), Bio*One Capital of the EDB and the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) of the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR). BMSG is responsible for industry development, Bio*One Capital makes strategic investments in companies that lead to economic spin offs for Singapore, while BMRC takes the lead in coordinating and funding public sector and academic research, as well as supporting the development of human capital. There are now close to 45 pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical devices manufacturing plants in Singapore. There are also over 30 companies with R&D operations here. Some examples of companies with significant operations are provided below. In 1994, Schering-Plough became the first US pharmaceutical corporation to establish manufacturing operations in Singapore. Over the next 12 years, the company continued to expand its operations across the value chain. Today, Schering-Plough is Singapore's largest pharmaceutical investor and employer, with a fixed asset investment exceeding US$1bn. Building on its base of seven manufacturing plants in Singapore, the company has the most comprehensive pharmaceutical manufacturing profile in the country. The products made in Singapore include active drug substances, tablets, dry powder inhalers, sterile injectables and nasal sprays. Apart from manufacturing, Schering-Plough's Asia-Pacific headquarters is also located in Singapore to coordinate and direct marketing, sales and business activities for its subsidiaries in more than 12 countries.https://link.springer.com/article/10.1057/palgrave.jcb.3050083

  • http://www.afr.com/news/world/singapore-displays-its-skills-in-global-shop-window-20150730-ginh25 Singapore, the second busiest port in the world, is pursuing a flourishing trade beyond the wharfs: exporting itself. As rapid urbanisation rips through Asia and the world, the island state is forging a role for itself by cloning its own skills and models, from teaching maths and treating water to developing airports or entire cities. "A lot of cities in the region are looking at Singapore in terms of potential lessons they can learn," says Malone-Lee Lai Choo, director at the National University of Singapore's Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities. Their interest, she says, ranges from Singapore's expertise in waste or water treatment systems through to urban planning. Myanmar officials were even keen to take Singapore's roof gardens to the dilapidated streets of Yangon. Steve Leonard, who heads the government's drive to become the world's pioneering digital nation, points to the similarity of challenges faced the world over, from crowded roads to insufficient hospital beds. Water purification, he says, is "something Singapore has brought to lots of parts of the world. It is something we needed, but lots of other countries face that too. And now we look to do the same thing with tech around health."

Constitution http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/aol/search/display/view.w3p;page=0;query=DocId%3A"cf2412ff-fca5-4a64-a8ef-b95b8987728e"%20Status%3Ainforce%20Depth%3A0;rec=0
The Constitution of the Republic of Singapore is the supreme law ofSingapore. A written constitution, the text which took effect on 9 August 1965 is derived from the Constitution of the State of Singapore 1963, provisions of theFederal Constitution of Malaysia made applicable to Singapore by the Republic of Singapore Independence Act 1965 (No. 9 of 1965, 1985 Rev. Ed.), and the Republic of Singapore Independence Act itself. The text of the Constitution is one of the legally binding sources of constitutional law in Singapore, the others being judicial interpretations of the Constitution, and certain other statutes. Non-binding sources are influences on constitutional law such as soft law, constitutional conventions, and public international lawIn the exercise of its original jurisdiction – that is, its power to hear cases for the first time – the High Court carries out two types of judicial review: judicial review of legislation, and judicial review of administrative acts. Although in a 1980 case the Privy Council held that the fundamental liberties in Part IV of the Constitution should be interpreted generously, Singapore courts usually adopt a philosophy of deference to Parliamentand a strong presumption of constitutional validity, which has led to fundamental liberties being construed narrowly in certain cases. The courts also generally adopt a purposive approach, favouring interpretations that promote the purpose or object underlying constitutional provisions. Article 4 of the Constitution expressly declares that it is the supreme law of the land. The Constitution also appears to satisfy Albert Venn Dicey's three criteria for supremacy: codification, rigidity, and the existence of judicial review by the courts. However, the view has been taken that it may not be supreme in practice and that Singapore's legal system is de facto characterized by parliamentary sovereignty.

Shangri-La Dialogue
- Initiated in 2002 in response to the clear need for a forum where the Asia-Pacific’s defence ministers could engage in dialogue aimed at building confidence and fostering practical security cooperation, the Asia Security Summit – or IISS Shangri-La Dialogue as it has come to be known – has established itself as a key element of the emerging regional security architecture. It is the most important regular gathering of defence professionals in the region and has become a vital annual fixture in the diaries of Asia-Pacific defence ministers and their civilian and military chiefs of staff. By catering for their specific interests and needs, and by facilitating easy communication and fruitful contact among them, the Shangri-La Dialogue has helped to engender a sense of community among the most important policy-makers in the defence and security establishments of regional states and of major powers with significant stakes in Asia-Pacific security. The Dialogue’s format, agenda, and cohort of delegates have evolved incrementally. The IISS soon modified the Dialogue’s structure – originally based simply on plenary sessions – to permit several simultaneous break-out groups during one half-day of the summit, allowing in-depth discussion of a greater variety of critical regional security topics. After several years, we established the principle that all speaking slots in plenary sessions and break-out groups would be allocated to ministers, other senior official delegates or distinguished legislators with strong defence credentials.
- http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/1963157/what-shangri-la-dialogue-and-why-it-so-importantThe IISS Asia Security Summit was launched in 2002 by British think tank the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Singaporean government. This annual dialogue brings together defence ministers and military chiefs from 28 Asia-Pacific countries to talk about security in the region. It gets its name from the location of the meeting, the Shangri-La hotel in Singapore. The dialogue gathers military representatives from some of the world’s most powerful countries to discuss pressing and significant defence and security issues. The meeting is a chance for defence ministers, military chiefs and high-ranking defence officials to hold bilateral meetings on its sidelines. It is also attended by legislators, academic experts, journalists and business delegates from around the globe, making it a vehicle for public policy development and discussions on defence and security in the Asia-Pacific.

A Sustainable Population for a Dynamic Singapore: Population White Paper (Chinese人口白皮书), or simply known as the Population White Paper (PWP), is a controversial white paper released by the government of Singapore in January 2013 that projects Singapore's population as 6.9 million by the year 2030.The PWP projects an increase of 1.6 million people from 2013, or an average of 100,000 more people in Singapore each year.[2] The PWP argued that up to 30,000 new permanent residents and 25,000 naturalized citizens each year are needed to sustain Singapore's population due to the falling birth rates in Singapore. It also justified immigration and presence of foreign workers as helping local businesses thrive and "create good jobs for Singaporeans". The PWP also included additional measures to encourage marriage and increase the birth rate. The motion was passed in Parliament to endorse the PWP by 77 votes to 13 (the 13 opponents included all members of the opposition and three nominated MPs),[4] albeit after amendments made to leave out "population policy" and add focus on infrastructure and transport development.[5]
- [precarious belongings] immigrant intake steadily grown over the past couple of decades.  Of this, both temporary and permanent migrant from prc make up the largest group followed by those from india and philiippines.

  • immigrant composition - chinese (74.1pc), malays (13.4pc), indians (9.2pc) in 2010.  The so-called CMIO policy of multiracialism confined singapore's national identity to these four races.
  • well known for its amary of low-wage temporary migrant workers employed in various manual and labor-intensive occupations such as construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, service sector roles, and domestic work.  It has also long imported white collar labor on temporary employment passes,. Recently the skilled workforce has changed and large numbers of middling professionals from other parts of asia (mainly india and china, but also large nos of filipinos and other southeast asian groups) are working and increasingly settling permanently in singapore.
- mega dormitories

  • The living conditions of Singapore’s army of low-wage migrant workers have become a matter of national debate over the past month as the novel coronavirus swept through their dormitories – the biggest of which house between 10 and 20 men to a room, sometimes sharing a communal shower area with more than 100 others. The dormitory operators, ranging from listed conglomerates to smaller construction companies, have since come in for criticism after reports emerged of kitchens infested with cockroaches, and bathrooms with overflowing urinals. As dormitories are regulated by the government, it has raised questions about how the authorities have enforced rules, why they seemed to have overlooked a brewing outbreak and if tougher legislation is needed on dormitories, some of which have become highly profitable for their owners. At Cochrane Lodge 2 where Khokan has lived for eight years, dormitory staff seemed unprepared for the Covid-19 outbreak, he said, even though Singapore had its first infection as early as January 23  and the first migrant worker caught the disease on February 8. The underpinning societal divide between migrant workers and Singaporeans that the pandemic has exposed is nothing new. In 2008, for example, residents of the upper-middle-class Serangoon Gardens neighbourhood fought the government’s plans to convert an unused school there into a workers’ dormitory. Of the 7,000 households, 1,400 signed a petition, citing how there might be higher crime rates and that property values would fall. Even though the government eventually went ahead with its plan, multiple changes were made, including the building of a road so that buses transporting workers could bypass the congested neighbourhood. Some mega-dorms, or what officials call purpose-built dormitories, had already existed then, but what led to their proliferation and a concerted effort to move more workers into these quarters was a riot in Little India in 2013. A road accident in December that year killed an Indian construction worker, angering other foreign workers who formed a 300-strong mob that set fire to police and emergency vehicles. Some 50 police officers were injured and the government had to mobilise its elite Gurkha contingent. In the light of the episode, then deputy prime minister and home affairs minister Teo Chee Hean convened a committee of inquiry to investigate the riot. Residents testified that migrant workers, who visited Little India to buy groceries and remit money, would often congregate under apartment buildings to drink and eat. Some residents said they were unhappy that the workers littered, vomited and urinated there. The committee later recommended that the government work with dormitory operators to include more facilities at workers’ living quarters. “Dormitory-based provision shops, especially if reasonably priced, could also encourage some workers to stay at their dormitory rather than travel out to a congregation area,” it said in its 2014 report. The government eventually commissioned the building of purpose-built dormitory complexes with minimarts, food courts, and even cinemas and cricket fields – described by then manpower minister Tan Chuan-Jin as “self-contained living, social and recreational facilities” when he introduced the legislation governing them in 2015. This Foreign Employee Dormitories Act (FEDA) sets out how mega-dormitories with more than 1,000 workers should be licensed and run, including provisions for sanitation, hygiene and living space per worker.Even as new rules were enacted, dormitory operators saw huge market potential, as construction and manufacturing firms continued to import foreign labour.Centurion Corporation, for example – which lists five of the city state’s mega-dormitories among the 12 worker accommodation assets it operates across Singapore and Malaysia – reported an 11 per cent jump in revenue to S$133.4 million (US$94.66 million) last year from the previous financial year. Ngoh Yi Sin, an equity research analyst at CIMB Bank, said a regulatory shift which required employers to move workers into accommodation of a higher standard further drove demand. The industry was not easy to enter, she said, noting the huge amount of start-up capital and scale a firm would need – but Lee Keng Ling, an analyst at DBS Bank, said Centurion, among other early players, had the first-mover advantage, which allowed business to quickly take off. Centurion’s purpose-built worker accommodation segment registered annual average growth of 37 per cent from 2011 to 2019, according to Kong. The firm’s dormitories – Weslite Toh Guan, Westlite Mandai, Westlite Woodlands, Westlite Juniper and ASPRI-Westlite Papan – house 28,000 workers. There are 27 players in Singapore’s concentrated dormitory industry, most of which are profit-making enterprises, though eight dorms are non-commercial. While commercial players charge about S$300 to S$400 per worker a month, non-commercial operators use their dormitories to house their own workers. As well as Centurion, other major operators include Vorbis Enterprise, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aik Chuan Construction Group, which owns three dormitories in Singapore housing more than 20,000 workers. SembCorp Industries, Keppel Corporation, Capital Development, S11 Capital Investment, and Cushman & Wakefield Facilities and Engineering all also operate more than one dorm. All of them have declined to comment on their dormitory ventures and the impact of the pandemic. Other smaller players include construction companies and shipping lines.  https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3082453/coronavirus-after-little-india-riot-singapore-promised

The lawyers served a letter to two people, according to local media.Local blogs in recent days had been highlighting posts by Facebook users who questioned the involvement of government-linked urban planning firm Surbana Jurong – whose international chief executive Teo Eng Cheong is Teo’s husband – in the conversion of the Singapore Expo, an exhibition centre, into a facility housing 8,000 beds. The centre is among several so-called community-care facilities that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s government hastily developed in April as Covid-19 infections surged through cramped dormitories that house hundreds of thousands of low-wage guest workers. https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/3085341/coronavirus-singapore-rebuts-claims-manpower-minister-josephine

    • Urban planning, in fact, began with the Raffles Town Plan in late 1822, barely four years after Singapore’s founding. More than 80 per cent of Singaporeans today live in government-built and subsidised flats; indeed, Singapore has the world’s most comprehensive public housing programme. This began with the establishment of the Singapore Improvement Trust in 1927 with the aim of providing affordable housing for the general population. Singapore’s much-vaunted social security system – the Central Provident Fund (CPF) – was also instituted by the British in 1955. https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/2184501/200-years-raffles-singapore-can-embrace-another-british-idea

    - first state visit to UK, ties between UK and Singapore http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-uk-ties-new/1435366.html?cid=FBSG Having stayed two nights at Buckingham Palace, President Tan said besides the high level of service, Singapore can also learn from Britain's strong history and culture. "It's been a wonderful experience for my wife and me to have this opportunity. We will always remember it - how the state banquet was a special experience in the way in which it was carried out. "Of course you've got special touches, which I don't think we can emulate, having the pipers at the end of the state dinner to signal the end, maybe we can get our Singapore pipers to do something like that and at the Guildhall, of course, they've got the competing trumpets as well. These are something, which grow out of their history. "Staying at the palace every morning, at 9am, there'll be a piper marching around, signalling, waking us all up. I hope the Queen keeps on this tradition. These are small things, but they reflect a society which has long historical roots, which keeps up old links. But for us in Singapore it is very important for us as we progress ahead, we develop further, to continue to remember our roots, where we came from, what is important to us, the relationships, our unique multi-racial society.
At the southern tip of mainland Singapore is a deep harbour first noticed by Sir William Farquhar in 1819. Later referred to simply as New Harbour, major development of the area started in the 1850s when the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) established operations there. In 1900, the strategically important harbour was renamed Keppel Harbour in honour of Admiral Henry Keppel, a British naval officer with strong ties to Singapore. The Port of Singapore Authority’s Keppel Terminal began operations next to the harbour in 1991 and has since become one of the world’s busiest container terminals. In the early 1970s, a saucer-shaped revolving restaurant was constructed atop the Prima Floor Mills Building (centre) situated along Keppel Road. The restaurant, eventually known as Prima Tower Revolving Restaurant, only opened in the late 1970s due to construction delays. It was then one of only three such revolving restaurants in Singapore, the others being found at Mandarin Hotel and Change Alley Aerial Plaza respectively. https://www.roots.sg/learn/collections/listing/1188295

    • Internet users also soon latched on to the topic of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), a free-trade deal signed in 2005 between India  and Singapore . They claimed the deal gave Indian nationals a free pass to work in the Lion City, as online vigilantes doxxed the man and called on his employer to axe him, claiming his qualifications had been falsified. Days after the video went viral, hundreds of demonstrators turned up at a rally protesting against CECA and Singapore’s population growth. This public anger was reminiscent of that seen in 2013 when the government issued a projection that Singapore’s population could hit 6.9 million by 2030. The number currently stands at 5.7 million, roughly 1.7 million of whom are foreigners.https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/3039999/indian-community-chinese-filipinos-singapore-feels-strain

If developed as planned, a 10-gigawatt-capacity array of panels will be spread across 15,000 hectares and be backed by battery storage to ensure it can supply power around the clock. Overhead transmission lines will send electricity to Darwin and plug into the NT grid. But the bulk would be exported via a high-voltage direct-current submarine cable snaking through the Indonesian archipelago to Singapore. The developers say it will be able to provide one-fifth of the island city-state’s electricity needs, replacing its increasingly expensive gas-fired power.

The Japanese occupation of Singapore in World War II took place from 1942 to 1945, following the fall of the British colony on 15 February 1942. Military forces of the Empire of Japan occupied it after defeating the combined British, IndianAustralian, and Malayan garrison in the Battle of Singapore. The occupation was to become a major turning point in the histories of several nations, including those of Japan, Britain, and the then-colonial state of Singapore. Singapore was renamed Syonan-to (昭南島 Shōnan-tō?), meaning "Light of the South".

      • The State of Johore and the City Council of Singapore signed two long-term Water Agreements. The first Water Agreement was signed in 1961 and expired in August 2011. Under this Agreement, Singapore was entitled to draw an unrestricted quantity of raw water from the Tebrau and Scudai Rivers. In return, the agreement stipulated that Singapore would provide Johor with treated water amounting to 12% of the water that we had imported. When the 1961 Water Agreement expired on 31 August 2011, Singapore handed the Johor State government the Gunong Pulai and Scudai waterworks as well as the pump houses at Pontian and Tebrau which we had been operating and maintaining at our own cost.  These facilities were handed to them free of charge and in good working order. The second Water Agreement was signed in 1962 and will expire in 2061. It entitles Singapore to draw and use the water from the Johor River up to a maximum of 250 million gallons of raw water per day.  In return, we provide Johor with treated water up to 2% of the water we import. PUB draws water from the Johor River and treats the water at the Johor River Waterworks located near Kota Tinggi in Johor. The water we import from Johor is one of our “Four National Taps”.The Water Agreements were guaranteed by the Government of Malaysia in the Separation Agreement signed in 1965 that established Singapore as an independent and sovereign state. The guarantee was also enacted into the Malaysian Constitution by an Act of Parliament. The Malaysian Constitution was annexed to the Separation Agreement. http://pdf.wenweipo.com/2018/08/15/a18-0815.pdf

Malaysia's Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) late Friday (Jun 19) said that its CEO was misquoted in an interview pubished by a Malaysian business paper, that it preferred to terminate the upcoming high-speed rail (HSR) terminus at the two nations' existing CIQ (customs, immigration and quarantine) complex in Johor Bahru. In an interview with The Edge Malaysia published on Monday, SPAD's CEO Mohd Nur Ismal Mohd Kamal was asked to elaborate on how the final station on Singapore's end is "an issue". "We would prefer to terminate the line at the existing CIQ. However, Singapore wants it to terminate in Jurong East and understandably so," he said. "Just as we want to develop Bandar Malaysia, they want to use the HSR to drive development in Jurong East. "From our perspective, by terminating it at the CIQ, the entire project will be within our borders and we will have more control of it. This will be closer to Orchard Road than Jurong East," The Edge quoted him as saying. "But of course, we have to weigh Singapore's economic and commercial considerations as well to come to an agreement."

      • https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3041681/pork-gods-can-singapore-solve-hong-kongs-pig-problem Hong Kong may have more to learn from Singapore, even though the Lion City imports only about 126,000 tonnes of pork every year – about a quarter of the amount Hong Kong does Singapore’s pork imports can be split into three categories: live pigs from Pulau Bulan in Indonesia and Sarawak, Malaysia; frozen pork from 23 countries, and chilled pork from eight.Singapore’s only abattoir processes about 1,000 pigs a day from Pulau Bulau. These come in on a barge and are herded into the abattoir where three inspectors check for anomalies regarding gait, body condition, and skin colour. Pigs that pass the inspection are branded with a pink mark, then slaughtered and sold as chilled pork. One avenue of inquiry for Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will be whether it can import live pigs in a similar fashion. In 2008, Singapore launched a public education programme encouraging consumers to buy frozen meat to reduce reliance on freshly killed or chilled meat. The campaign is credited with boosting frozen pork consumption from 57,600 tonnes in 2008 to 71,900 tonnes in 2012, while consumption of chilled pork fell by 1,700 tonnes in the same period. The campaign was a revival of the Lion City’s Eat Frozen Pork Campaign, launched in 1985 when the country was phasing out domestic pig farming. Since then the price of pork has been remarkably stable in Singapore; last year chilled lean pork cost S$13.73 per kg (US$10 per kg), up by roughly just S$1 in a decade.Experts said that Hong Kong, too, could benefit by encouraging consumers to embrace frozen pork and thus reduce the city’s reliance on importing live pigs. In 2002, frozen pork accounted for 46 per cent of Hong Kong’s pork imports, live pigs accounted for 51 per cent and chilled pork made up the rest.https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3041681/pork-gods-can-singapore-solve-hong-kongs-pig-problem

Now, the two brothers are facing off against each other in court over the estate of their late mother, who died in 2013 at the age of 88. Henry, 64, is seeking to uphold a will that Madam Ng Lay Hua made in 2012, in which she left the lion's share of her assets to him. Madam Ng had left him a detached house in Sian Tuan Avenue, a semi-detached house in Watten Terrace and half a share of a detached house in Hua Guan Avenue. The other half of the Hua Guan Avenue house was left to Madam Ng's granddaughter, the child of her eldest daughter. The value of the properties, all in the Bukit Timah area, was not mentioned in court. Eldest son Charles, 67, whose entire family was cut out of the will, is contesting its validity. He asserts that his mother lacked the capacity to make a valid will after her physical and mental health deteriorated in 2006. Charles, the only one of her four children who has male offspring, contends that it was irrational for the traditional woman to exclude her eldest son, only grandson and only great-grandsons completely from her will.

http://pdf.wenweipo.com/2017/04/06/a32-0406.pdf
