- In August 1211, during the Battle of Yehuling 野狐岭战役 , Genghis Khan's 90,000 strong force destroyed the 450,000 strong Jin dynasty army. The water-scarce city was historically the chief northern gate in the Great Wall to China for Europeans travelling along the Northern Tea Road (such as Ivan Petlin(1619)[2] or Nicolae Milescu), often through the Juyong Pass. From at least 1571, the city was an important horse market for Mongolian mounts imported into China. From 1727 it was an important station for the Kyakhta tradebetween Russia and China. In early autumn long lines of camels would come in from all quarters for the conveyance of the tea chests from "Kalgan" (Zhangjiakou) to Kyakhta across the Gobi Desert. Each caravan usually made three journeys in the winter. In the 19th century some Russian merchants had permanent residences and warehouses just outside the gate. In October 1909, Kalgan was connected by railway with Peking. The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica noted that, in Kalgan, "the ordinary houses have an unusual appearance, from the fact that they are mostly roofed with earth and become covered with green-sward" and that "on the way to Peking the road passes over a beautiful bridge of seven arches, ornamented with marble figures of animals". In 1937, the Japanese occupied the region and made Kalgan the capital of the autonomous Cha-nan (South Chahar) Province. The Federated Mengjiang Commission was set up to supervise the economic affairs, banking, communications, and industry of Japanese-occupied Inner Mongolia (Mengjiang). In the early 1960s, at the height of Sino-Soviet tensions, Zhangjiakou was considered one of the most important cities in China for military strategy reasons. Zhangjiakou was aptly nicknamed, "Beijing's Northern Door", because whoever controlled Zhangjiakou was in a good position to either attack (in the case of the Soviets) or defend (in the case of the Chinese) Beijing.

- JA Solar Holdings, one of the world's largest producers of solar energy products, is seeking to expand in emerging markets touched by China's Belt and Road Initiative. The move comes in the face of a competitive price war in the solar industry and declining profits in the United States and Europe brought by heavy import taxes as high as 165 percent. China's Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which aim to improve cooperation with countries in Asia, Europe and Africa, "provide huge opportunities for us," said Jin Baofang, president of JA Solar, on the sidelines of the ongoing two sessions in Beijing. "Installed solar capacity has suffered a decline in some traditional markets, such as the US." Jin, who also serves as an NPC deputy, said the company plans to install solar panels in all cities and towns along the Belt and Road routes. As anti-dumping import duties have savaged the bottom lines of Chinese solar panel makers over the last couple of years, many makers, including JA Solar, are turning to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia to build production bases as a springboard to spread business across the region. The company, based in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, built its first overseas manufacturing plant in Penang, Malaysia. A key factor that has pushed Chinese solar companies to invest in Malaysia is that solar panels made there do not invite heavy duties in the US and Europe, as those made in China do. Located in Penang Bayan Lepas Industrial Park, the first production line has an annual capacity of 400 megawatts, creating more than 700 jobs for local people. JA Solar has now begun construction on the second phase of the factory. Jin said Penang's strategic location in Southeast Asia, its accessibility to airports and seaports and the availability of reliable infrastructure support the additional manufacturing capacity. The company also plans to focus on markets in India, West Asia and Southeast Asia, Jin said. Last year, it shipped 100-MW solar modules to Pakistan's first solar power station to feed growing electricity demand. The station was connected to the grid when President Xi paid a state visit to Pakistan in April.

- LSK House Technology Co Ltd, a leading Chinese manufacturer of steel houses, said it had signed a joint-venture agreement with a US building company to construct a factory in Miami to make light steel-framed housing. The Chinese group, based in Langfang, Hebei province, said it will invest $60 million in the factory and control 90 percent of the equity in the joint venture. Construction of the factory will start in November. After completion, it will have a capacity to manufacture 1 million square meters of steel houses annually and the units will be sent to customers in Chile for final assembly. LSK House said the agreement was signed during the 10th China-LAC business summit held in Tangshan during the weekend. Back in 2014, the replica Sphinx angered Egyptian authorities and met with an international backlash. According to Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly, the Egyptian Ministry of State of Antiquities filed a complaint with UNESCO in 2014 to express strong disapproval of the unauthorized full-sized replica. At the time, Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim told media that the replica was "a bad imitation that disfigures the original" and harmed Egypt's cultural heritage. The statue belongs to a large theme park that also serves as a production facility for movies and TV shows. Staff with the theme park company responded to the complaint saying that the replica was merely a film prop and in no way undermined world heritage, according to a Beijing News report. Despite this, the company dismantled the replica in 2016. No official statement has been issued yet as to why the statue has returned to its original location. Measuring 20 meters high and 60 meters in length, the statue is an exact replica of the original statue in Egypt. In China, imitations of iconic international sites are common, such as a replica Eiffel Tower in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province and a replica White House in Shanghai.
