The Constitution of the Philippines (Filipino: Saligang Batas ng Pilipinas) is the constitution or supreme law of the Republic of the Philippines. Its final draft was completed by the Constitutional Commission on October 12, 1986 and was ratified by a nationwide plebiscite on February 2, 1987. Three other constitutions have effectively governed the country in its history: the 1935 Commonwealth Constitution, the 1973 Constitution, and the 1986 Freedom Constitution. The earliest constitution establishing a "Philippine Republic," the 1899 Malolos Constitution, was never fully implemented throughout the Philippines and did not establish a state that was internationally recognized, due in great part to the impending American occupation during its adoption.

Currently, the Philippine constitution sets out a line of succession from the president to the vice-president, senate president and then speaker of the house of representatives (the lower house, or Congress), but does not go beyond that. The separate bills, filed by senator Panfilo Lacson in the upper house and congresswoman Precious Castelo in the lower house, seek to give the president the power to choose a cabinet member to take over in the event of the constitutional successors dying or being incapacitated.

***The Calamian Islands or Calamianes is a group of islands in the Philippine province of Palawan. Historically, the Calamianes was site of the Spanish politico-militar Provincia de Calamianes. The Spanish Empire later purchased mainland Paragua from the Sultan of Borneo. Cebu is one of the most developed provinces in the Philippines with Metro Cebu being the second largest metropolitan area in the Philippines (after Metro Manila) and Cebu City as the main center of commerce, trade, education and industry in the Visayas. In a decade it has transformed into a global hub for shipping, furniture-making, tourism, business processing services, and heavy industry. The name "Cebu" comes from the old Cebuano word sibu or sibo ("trade"), a shortened form of sinibuayng hingpit ("the place for trading"). It was originally applied to the harbors of the town of Sugbu, the ancient name for Cebu City. Alternate renditions of the name by traders between the 13th to 16th centuries include Sebu, Sibuy, Zubu, or Zebu, among others. Sugbu, in turn, is derived from the Old Cebuano term for "scorched earth" or "great fire". The Rajahnate of Cebu was a native kingdom which existed in Cebu prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. It was founded by Sri Lumay otherwise known as Rajamuda Lumaya, a half-Malay, half-Tamil prince of the Chola dynasty who invaded Sumatra in Indonesia. He was sent by the Maharajah to establish a base for expeditionary forces to subdue the local kingdoms, but he rebelled and established his own independent Rajahnate instead.
- The Carbon Market is the oldest and largest farmer's market in Cebu City, located in the Central Visayasregion of the Philippines, is named for the depot where coal was unloaded from the Cebu Railroad. Another story is that it was named for the "heaps of waste" cinders dumped here in the 19th Century. As of 2009, it was over one hundred years old. In 2000, some vendors created a cooperative to sell their wares, and later two other cooperatives were formed by different units of the market. The Carbon Market Vendors Development Cooperative (or Cemvedco) was formed by consolidating the three cooperatives created in 2002.In 2007, the rebuilding of the market caused a political controversy, leading one vendor to run for city council from the barangay of Ermita, winning on that single-issue platform. As of September 2009, the Cebu City government is moving some larger commodity sellers to a newer market, the Bagsakan market.

The latter should not be confused with the aboriginal Yami of Taiwan that live on islands farther north beyond Philippine territorial limits, but are geographically, culturally and linguistically related to the Ivatan people.

Mindanao is named after the Maguindanaons who constituted the largest Sultanatehistorically, and evidence from maps made during the 17th and 18th centuries suggests that the name was used to refer to the island by the powerful natives at the time. Evidence of human occupation dates back tens of thousands of years. In prehistoric times the Negritopeople arrived. Sometime around 1500 BC, Austronesian peoples spread throughout thePhilippines and far beyond. Native people of the Maluku Islands refer the island as Maluku Besar (Great Moluccas). *******西内格罗省Negros Occidental (Hiligaynon: Negros Nakatundan; Tagalog: Kanlurang Negros), also known as Occidental Negros or Western Negros, is a province located in the region of Western Visayas, in the Philippines. It occupies the northwestern half of the large island of Negros, and borders Negros Oriental, which comprises the southeastern half. Known as the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines", Negros Occidental produces more than half the nation's sugar output.Negros was originally known to the natives as "Buglas", meaning "cut off" in old Hiligaynon. When the Spaniards arrived in April 1565, they named it "Negros" because of the dark-skinned natives they found. Two of the earliest native settlements were Binalbagan and Ilog which later became towns in 1572 and 1584, respectively. Other settlements were Hinigaran, Bago, Marayo (now Pontevedra), Mamalan (now Himamaylan) and Candaguit (now a sitio of San Enrique). Ilog was made the first capital of the province in 1743. This was later transferred to Himamaylan. Bacolodfinally became the capital in 1849. The island was divided into Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in 1890. It became a protectorate of the United States until 1901, when the republic was dissolved, with the two provinces annexed back to the Philippines.

The Pasig River (Filipino: Ilog Pasig and Spanish: Río Pásig) is a river in the Philippines that connects Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay. The Pasig River used to be an important transport route and source of water for Spanish Manila. Due to negligence and industrial development, the river has become very polluted and is considered biologically dead (i.e., unable to sustain life) by ecologists. The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), which was established to oversee rehabilitation efforts for the river, is supported by private sector organisations such as the Clean and Green Foundation, Inc. that introduced the Piso para sa Pasig (Filipino: "A peso for the Pasig") campaign in the 1990s.
- The Pasig River served as an important means of transport; it was Manila's lifeline and center of economic activity. Some of the most prominent kingdoms in early Philippine history, including the kingdoms of Namayan, Maynila, and Tondo grew up along the banks of the river, drawing their life and source of wealth from it. When the Spanish established Manila as the capital of their colonial properties in the Far East, they built the walled city of Intramuros on the southern bank of Pasig River near its mouth. The commonly accepted origin for the endonym "Tagalog" is the term tagá-ilog, which means "people from [along] the river". An alternative theory states that the name is derived from tagá-alog, which means "people from the ford" (the prefix tagá- meaning "coming from" or "native of").[5] In 1821, American diplomat Edmund Roberts called the Tagalog Tagalor in his memoirs about his trips to the Philippines. The earliest written record of the Tagalog is a 9th-century document known as the Laguna Copperplate Inscription which is about a remission of debt on behalf of the ruler of Tondo. Inscribed on it is year 822 of the Saka Era, the month of Waisaka, and the fourth day of the waning moon, which corresponds to Monday, April 21, 900 CE in the Proleptic Gregorian calendar.[8] The writing system used is the Kawi Script, while the language is a variety of Old Malay, and contains numerous loanwords from Sanskrit and a few non-Malay vocabulary elements whose origin may be Old Javanese. Some contend it is between Old Tagalog and Old Javanese
Northern Samar (Waray: Amihan Samar/Norte han Samar) is a province in the Philippineslocated in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is Catarman and is located at the northern portion of the island of Samar. Historian William Henry Scott wrote that a “Samar datu by the name of Iberein was rowed out to a Spanish vessel anchored in his harbor in 1543 by oarsmen collared in gold; while wearing on his own person earrings and chains.” In the local epic called siday entitled Bingi of Lawan as written in the article of Scott, Lawan is a prosperous Lakanate in Samar. Datu Hadi Iberein came from the Lakanate of Lawan. In 1614, the Jesuits established a mission residence in Palapag among the Ibabao populace. These missionaries stayed until the late 17th century when they were expelled from the Philippines in 1768 and were replaced by the Franciscans.

Prior to the arrival of Islam in Sulu, the province used to adhere to local animist religions; this later changed to Hindu and Buddhist belief systems. Throughout this time, the Kingdom of Lupah Sug had been established centuries before Islam arrived. The advent of Islam around 1138 through merchants and traders had a distinct influence on Southeast Asia. The coming of Arabs, Persians and other Muslimspaved the way for the arrival of religious missionaries, traders, scholars and travelers to Sulu and Mindanao in the 12th century.

On August 20, Sultan Jamalul Kiram II and Brig. Gen. John C. Bates signed the Bates Agreement that continued the gradual emasculation of the Sultanate started by Spain (Treaty of 1878) until March 1915 when the Sultan abdicated his temporal powers in the Carpenter Agreement. The Agreement eliminated opposition to the civilian government of Gov. Clinton Solidum. The Department of Mindanao and Suluunder Gov. Carpenter was created by Philippine Commission Act 2309 (1914) and ended on February 5, 1920 by Act of Philippine Legislature No. 2878. The Bureau of Non-Christian Tribes was organized and briefly headed by Teofisto Guingona Sr. With the enactment by the US Congress of the Jones Law (Philippine Autonomy Law) in 1916, ultimate Philippine independence was guaranteed and the Filipinization of public administration began. Sulu, however, had an appointed American governor until 1935 and the Governor General in Manila had a say in Sulu affairs. At any rate, the essence of local governance forged by Rajah Baguindacontinued to permeate the ethos of Sulu politics despite centuries of colonial presence. History points to a local government in Sulu that antedates other similar systems in the country. The province hosted the Daru Jambangan (Palace of Flowers) which was the royal palace of the Sultan of Sulu since historical times. The palace, located in Maimbung was made of wood, and was destroyed in 1932 by a huge storm.During the brief Japanese occupation years, Sulu was bombed by the Japanese and was conquered afterwards. The Japanese were eventually expelled by the Americans and the natives of Sulu, and the Americans started to push for the independence of the Philippines as 'one country'. This prompted various leaders from Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago to campaign against being lumped with the Catholic natives of Luzon and the Visayas. Despite the campaign against the 'one Philippines model', the United States granted independence to the Philippines, effectively giving control of Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago to the Filipino government in Manila.

Primarily a residential and trading center, Talisay lies within the Metro Cebu area. It is bordered to the north by Cebu City, to the west is the city of Toledo, to the east is the Cebu Strait, and to the south is the town of Minglanilla. The name of Talisay is taken from the magtalisay tree which is abundant in the city.該市以燒豬(Inasal Baboy)聞名。et du détroit de Cebu (reliant la Mer de Bohol et la Mer des Camotes) au sud.
****** 塔威塔威省 Tawi-Tawi was named after its main island. Tawi-Tawi is the Sinama form of jawi-jawi, Malay for "banyan tree;" the island is known for having an abundance of this tree.[6] Early Spanish accounts give the name of the island as Tauitaui,[7] Tavi-Tavior Tavitavi.
The Visayas (/vɪˈsaɪəz/ vi-SY-əz), or the Visayan Islands (Cebuano: Kabisay-an, locally [kabiˈsajʔan]; Tagalog: Kabisayaan [kabiˈsɐjaʔan]), are one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines, along with Luzon and Mindanao. Located in the central part of the archipelago, it consists of several islands, primarily surrounding the Visayan Sea, although the Visayas are also considered the northeast extremity of the entire Sulu Sea.[3] Its inhabitants are predominantly the Visayan peoples. The major islands of the Visayas are Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte and Samar.[6] The region may also include the provinces of Palawan, Romblon, and Masbate whose populations identify as Visayan and whose languages are more closely related to other Visayan languages than to the major languages of Luzon. The etymology of Visayas is unknown. The word "Bisaya" was first documented in Spanish sources in reference only to the non-Ati inhabitants of the island of Panay and possibly parts of Negros. They were described by the Spanish as being "white people" with no tattoos. In contrast, the Spaniards called the inhabitants of other Visayan islands as the Pintados ("the painted ones") in reference to their practice of tattooing their entire bodies.
On October 12, 1936, Zamboanga became a chartered city under Commonwealth Act No. 39. - The Philippine water regulator’s decision to cancel the 15-year extension of concession deals with the country’s two largest utilities after pressure from could affect payments on a China-funded loan for a vital dam project, according to a lawmaker. Manila Water Co Inc and Maynilad Water Services were looking to charge users a water security fee on their bill, money that would have been put towards the repayment of a US$211 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank). The loan is for the construction of the New Centennial Water Source-Kaliwa Dam Project, which is meant to secure water supply to Manila even during dry seasons. Water regulator Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) on Wednesday told lawmakers it had revoked last week a decision to extend water concession deals with the two utilities until 2037. Now the fairy tale is threatened by three things: the arrival of Chinese online gambling firms, a government programme that stops new call centres being built in Manila, and the rapid improvement of artificial intelligence (AI). Twenty-five years ago, BPO was a tiny mote in the economy – now, it’s a multibillion-dollar industry. Jonathan Ravelas, chief market strategist at BDO Unibank, the Philippines’ largest bank, estimates BPO earnings at about 10 per cent of gross domestic product – close to the US$26 billion sent home yearly by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This makes it the second largest earner of US dollars in the country. In its 2015 annual report, the Philippine Statistics Authority said the income came mainly from the United States , Netherlands, Australia, Britain and Canada. Although most of the BPO sector’s activity involves call centres, outsourced jobs also include computer programming, medical transcription and animation, and cartoon production. Ravelas pointed out to This Week In Asia that unlike OFWs, BPO agents can work for foreign companies without having to go abroad – and families can remain intact because opportunities are available at home.

country name
- President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he might one day change the name of the Philippines and that a previous proposal to name the country "Maharlika," a term associated with the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, was a good one. Duterte, who often shuns the Philippines’ Spanish colonial roots, said it might better to have the Philippines change its name to something that is better suited for its “Malay” identity. “The Philippines was discovered by Magellan using the money of King Philip… Okay na iyan. Balang araw palitan natin. Actually tama si Marcos… gusto niyang palitan - Maharlika,” Duterte said in a speech during the distribution of certificates of land ownership award in Maguindanao. The Philippines was named after Spain's King Philip II in the 16th century, when the country was still a Spanish colony. Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos was the one who gave birth to the name “Las Islas Filipinas” for the archipelago. It was former Sen. Eddie Ilarde who proposed through Parliamentary Bill 195 that the name of the Philippines be changed to Maharlika, which, allegedly means “nobly created.” However, the word "maharlika" meant freemen and not kings, princes or nobles, according to historians. There is also no archeological or historical evidence supporting the existence of a kingdom called "Maharlika" in Southeast Asia. The "Kingdom of Maharlika" is related to the claim that a clan called Tagean-Tallano owns the whole Philippine archipelago. In 2015, a supposed descendant of the clan, Julian Tallano, was charged with fabricating land titles in Metro Manila. Marcos also used "Maharlika" in faking his military records during the World War 2, according to US Army investigators. He claimed to have commanded a group of guerrillas known as the "Maharlika Unit", but according to the New York Times, "Between 1945 and 1948 various Army officers rejected Mr. Marcos's two requests for official recognition of the unit, calling his claims distorted, exaggerated, fraudulent, contradictory and absurd. Army investigators finally concluded that Maharlika was a fictitious creation and that ''no such unit ever existed'' as a guerrilla organization during the war." The New York Times added that the United States Veterans' Administration, helped by the Philippine Army, found in 1950 that some people who had claimed membership in Maharlika actually committed "atrocities" against Filipino civilians rather than fighting the Japanese and had engaged in "nefarious activity." https://news.abs-cbn.com/news/02/11/19/duterte-mulls-changing-name-of-the-philippines

local administration
- Officially local government in the Philippines, often called local government unitsor LGUs, are divided into three levels – provincesand independent cities (All Philippine cities are chartered cities (Filipino: nakakartang lungsod), whose existence as corporate and administrative entities is governed by their own specific municipal charters in addition to the Local Government Code of 1991, which specifies their administrative structure and powers. As of September 7, 2019, there are 146 cities.) ; component cities and municipalities; and barangays. In one area, above provinces and independent cities, is an autonomous region, the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. Below barangays in some cities and municipalities are sitios and puroks. All of these, with the exception of sitios and puroks, elect their own executives and legislatures. Sitios and puroks are often led by elected barangay councilors.

- Lapu-Lapu (fl. 1521) was a ruler of Mactan inVisayas. Modern Philippine society regards him as the first Filipino hero because he was the first native to resist Spanish colonization. He is best known for the Battle of Mactan that happened at dawn on April 27, 1521, where he and his subjects defeated Ferdinand Magellan. The battle stopped Magellan's expedition and delayed the Spanish occupation of the islands by over forty years until the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi in 1564. Monuments to Lapu-Lapu have been built inManila and Cebu while the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection use his image.
- Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos, Sr. (11 September 1917 – 28 September 1989) was a Filipino politician and kleptocrat who was President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. He ruled as a dictator[6] under martial law from 1972 until 1981 .[7] His regime was infamous for its corruption, extravagance and brutality. Marcos claimed an active part in World War II, including fighting alongside the Americans in the Bataan Death March and being the "most decorated war hero in the Philippines". A number of his claims were found to be false and United States Army documents described Marcos's wartime claims as "fraudulent" and "absurd". Marcos started as an attorney, then served in the Philippine House of Representatives from 1949 to 1959 and the Philippine Senate from 1959 to 1965. He was elected President in 1965, and presided over a growing economy during the beginning and intermediate portion of his 20-year rule,[24] but ended in loss of livelihood, extreme poverty and a crushing debt crisis. Marcos placed the Philippines under martial law on September 23, 1972, during which he revamped the constitution, silenced the media, and used violence and oppression against the political opposition, Muslims, communist rebels, and ordinary citizens.
- on February 25, 1986, Marcos talked to United States Senator Paul Laxalt, a close associate of the United States President, Ronald Reagan, asking for advice from the White House. Laxalt advised him to "cut and cut cleanly", to which Marcos expressed his disappointment after a short pause.[168] In the afternoon, Marcos talked to Enrile, asking for safe passage for him and his family, and included his close allies like General Ver. Finally, at 9:00 p.m., the Marcos family was transported by four Sikorsky HH-3Ehelicopters[169] to Clark Air Base in Angeles City, Pampanga, about 83 kilometers north of Manila, before boarding US Air Force C-130 planes bound for Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, and finally to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii where Marcos arrived on February 26. As per the official twenty-three page US Customs record, the two C-141 transport planes that carried the Marcos family and their closest allies had 23 wooden crates; 12 suitcases and bags, and various boxes, whose contents included enough clothes to fill 67 racks; 413 pieces of jewelry; 24 gold bricks, inscribed “To my husband on our 24th anniversary”; and more than 27m Philippine pesos in freshly-printed notes. The jewelry included 70 pairs of jewel-studded cufflinks; an ivory statue of the infant Jesus with a silver mantle and a diamond necklace. The total value of these items was $15 millon. Meanwhile, when protestors stormed Malacañang Palace shortly after their departure, it was famously discovered that Imelda had left behind over 2,700 pairs of shoes in her closet. The Catholic hierarchy and Manila's middle class were crucial to the success of the massive crusade, but only within Metro Manila because no mass demonstrations or protests against Marcos occurred in the provinces and islands of Visayas and Mindanao.

A combination of strong domestic growth, bargain prices in retreating economies abroad and rock-bottom borrowing rates had fuelled the acquisitions, analysts said. The Philippines has for years exported shopping malls and junk food to the region, but cashed-up firms have diversified in recent years with acquisitions around the world and in many sectors. "It has not happened in this rapid succession. It's like a colonial mentality in reverse," said Luis Limlingan, a research head at stockbroker Regina Capital. The pace of the acquisitions has startled both domestic and foreign investors, according to BDO Unibank chief market strategist Jonathan Ravelas. "Filipino companies are moving into the global space and it's not limited to just one sector. The opportunities abound," he said. - The Santo Niño de Cebú (Cebuano: Balaang Bata sa Sugbo, Filipino: Ang Banal na Sanggol ng Cebu, Spanish: Santo Niño de Cebú, Central Bicolano: Santo Nino kan Cebu) is a Roman Catholic title of the Child Jesus associated with a religious image of the Christ Child[1] widely venerated as miraculous by Filipino Catholics. It is the oldest Catholic relic in the Philippines, originally a gift from explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and his chief consort on account of their baptism in 1521. The dark wood statue measures approximately twelve inches tall, and carved in the Flemish style. It depicts the Child Jesus, with a serene countenance, in the attitude and dress of a Spanish monarch. The statue bears imperial regalia including a gold crown, globus cruciger, and various sceptres, wears fine vestments, and possesses jewellery mostly offered by devotees over several centuries. Pope Paul VI granted a Canonical Coronation of the statue on 28 April 1965 and later raised its shrine to the status of Minor Basilica on 2 May 1965 via his Papal bull Cubanula Religionis to mark the 4th Centenary of Christianity in the Philippine Islands . The image is replicated in various parts of the country with different titles and is one of the most beloved and recognizable Filipino cultural icons. The annual dancing feast of Sinulog is held every January on the third Sunday in its honor.[5][10] Today, the original image is permanently encased behind bulletproof glass inside its chapel within the Minor Basilica del Santo Niño.The Santo Niño de Cebú image was originally produced by Flemish artisans, according to a hagiography, based on a vision of Teresa of Avila a mystic of the 16th century. The image of the Santo Niño is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines, along with the Magellan cross.[21] A church to house Santo Niño was built on the spot where the image was found by Juan Camus. The church was originally made out of bamboo and mangrove palm and claims to be the oldest parish in the Philippines. It was reconstructed later, and Pope Paul VIelevated it to the status of Minor Basilica on its 400th anniversary (Spanish: Basílica Menor del Santo Niño).

This ultimately became the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act. Lichauco spent WW-II in occupied Manila. After the war, Lichauco published "Dear Mother Putnam" to document day-to-day life in Japanese-occupied Manila. Cloma was born in Panglao to Ciriaco Cloma y Arbotante and Irenea Arbolente y Bongay, who were both natives of Panglao. He is best known for establishing the micronation of Freedomland in the Spratly Islands.Tomas Cloma Sr., owner of a fishing fleet, and owner of the private maritime training institute, the PMI Colleges (formerly known as Philippine Maritime Institute), aspired to open a cannery and develop guano deposits in the Spratlys. It was principally for economic reasons, therefore, that he "discovered" and claimed islands in the Spratlys. On May 11, 1956, Tomas Cloma Sr. together with 40 men, took formal possession of the islands, lying some 380 miles (612 km) west of the southern end of Palawan and named them Freedomland. On May 15, 1956, Cloma issued and posted copies of his "Notice to the Whole World" on each of the islands as a manifestation of unwavering claims over the territory. On May 31, 1956, Cloma declared the establishment of the Free Territory of Freedomland, ten days later he sent his second representation to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs informing the latter that the territory claimed was named Freedomland. In latest June 1956, Cloma stole the China(ROC)'s national flag from the Taiping Island. On July 6, 1956, Cloma declared to the whole world his claim and establishment of a separate government with its capital on Flat Island (also known as Patag Island). On July 7, 1956, after China (ROC) protested, Cloma surrendered the flag he stole to the China's embassy in Manila, and apologized officially. On Oct 2, 1956, he wrote a letter and ensured he would not make further training voyages or landings in the territorial waters of China (ROC). In the 1972 Cloma was jailed by Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos for four months for "impersonating a military officer by being called an ‘admiral’".[2] In August 1974 Cloma changed the name of the country from Freedomland to Colonia. At that same time he retired as Head of State in favour of John de Mariveles. In December 1974, Cloma was arrested and forced to sign a document to convey to the Philippines whatever rights he might have had in the territory for one peso. There are Philippine claims that they acquired the territory through that document. However the fact is that from August 1974, Cloma no longer had any territorial or sovereign rights to convey. In 1978, the Philippine president issued Presidential Decree No. 1596 to include majority of the Spratly Islands.

- John Robinson Lim Gokongwei, Jr. ( 吳奕輝; pinyin: Wú Yìhuī; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Gô͘ E̍k-hui; born Go Ek-hui on August 11, 1926) is a Filipino business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He has holdings in telecommunications, financial services, petrochemicals, power generation, aviation and livestock farming. John Gokongwei, Jr. was born in China to a Filipino-Chinese father who was a scion of a wealthy Cebu-based family, with ancestral ties to China's Fujian province. His patrilineal great-grandfather was Don Pedro Lee Gotiaoco, a wealthy Chinese immigrant tycoon who was once the largest taxpayer in Cebu.[3] The family fortune was lost when his affluent father died. John was 13 years old at this time. He initially supported his family by peddling items along the streets of Cebu from his bicycle.[4]From the age of 17 to 19, he traded using a wooden boat, taking items to [Dalahican, Lucena]] by sea, and then to Manila by truck. After the Second World War, he started his own company called Amasia, which imported textile remnants, fruit, old newspapers, magazines, and used clothing from the US. During this time, he courted a young girl, Elizabeth, who would later become his wife. In the early 1950s, along with his brothers and sisters who returned from China, he started to import cigarettes and whiskey too. In 1957, seeing that trading would always have low margins[4] and would always be dependent on government policies, the family concern entered the era of manufacturing. With a loan of 500 thousand pesos from Albino Sycip, then chairman of China Bank, and DK Chiong, he started a corn milling plant producing glucose and corn starch. The company was named Universal Corn Products and later expanded into Universal Robina Corporation. San Miguel Corporation was a big customer of theirs. He is the chairman of JG Summit Holdings, one of the largest conglomerates in the Philippines. In 2010, his company signed a $3billion order with Airbus for refleeting of his airline, Cebu Pacific Air. From 2003 his telecom company Digital Telecommunications Philippines spent nearly $800 million for its mobile carrier, Sun Cellular which is the 3rd largest mobile operator in the Philippines at that time before selling to the PLDT group for $1.7 billion. He attempted a $1 billion takeover of United Industrial Corporation Ltd (UIC), a property giant from Singapore of which he owned in excess of 30%. UIC controls Singapore Land, one of the biggest property landlord in Singapore. In 2013, his company bought the stake of San Miguel Corporation in MERALCO, the largest power distributor in the country, for close to $1.8 billion. Gokongwei also owns Universal Robina Corporation, one of the largest manufacturer of snacks in Southeast Asia. In July 2014, URC acquired Griffin's Foods from Pacific Equity Partners, a New Zealand food company for $609 million. He also controls Robinsons Land, one of the biggest property developers in the Philippines, which also operates a chain of malls. The Gokongwei Family controls over $20 billion of combined market capitalization for all the companies they own. In 1961, as his company started to launch brands such as Blend 45 (an instant coffee brand, to compete with Nestle's Nescafe), John returned to school to study and obtain an MBAat the De La Salle University. A decade later, he underwent a 14-week advanced management program at Harvard.
- He is married to Elizabeth Yu, and has six children (1 son and 5 daughters) - Lisa, Robina, Lance, Faith, Hope and Marcia. All his children play an active role in the Gokongwei empire and companies owned by JG Holdings. His only son, Lance Gokongwei, is now in charge of the Gokongwei Empire, serving as president and COO while John serves as chairman emeritus. John Gokongwei and fellow businessman Andrew Gotianun are distant cousins.[10] Gokongwei's great-grandfather was a half brother of Gotianun's grandfather.

- The Ati-Atihan Festival is a feast held annually in January in honor of the Santo Niño, Held on the third Sunday, in the town of Kalibo Philippines in the island of Panay originally came from Batan, Aklan, then adopted later by some neighboring towns. The name Ati-Atihanmeans "to be like Atis" or "to make believe Atis", the local name for the Aeta aborigines who first settled in Panay Island and other parts of the archipelago. The festival consists of tribal dance, music, accompanied by indigenous costumes and weapons, and parade along the street. Christians and non-Christians observe this day with religious processions. It has inspired many other Philippine Festivals including the Sinulog Festival of Cebu and Dinagyang of Iloilo City, both adaptations of the Kalibo's Ati-Atihan Festival, and legally holds the title "The Mother of All Philippine Festivals" in spite of the other two festivals' claims of the same title. The costumes worn at the festival is patterned after the African tribal design like those seen at the Rio Carnaval.A 1200 A.D. event explains the origins of the festival. A group of 10 Malay chieftains called Datus, fleeing from the island of Borneo settled in the Philippines, and were granted settlement by the Ati people, the tribes of Panay Island. Datu Puti made a trade with the natives and bought the plains for a golden salakot, brass basins and bales of cloth. They gave a very long necklace to the wife of the Ati chieftain. Feasting and festivities followed soon after.

- In Philippine languages, kababayan means "fellow Filipino, countryman, or townmate". It is used throughout the Philippines and throughout the various Philippine languages. Literally, ka- means "co-" and bayan means "town". In the narrow sense, kababayan means a fellow from the same town. However, it is often used in a much broader sense to mean countrymen or compatriots, especially by overseas Filipinos, OFWs, and connotes respect for each other’s commitment to unity because of their common cultural, political, and religiousbackground from the same "bayan", broadly defined. It should not be confused with balikbayan, a similar Filipino word, which refers exclusively to overseas Filipinos. "Balikbayan" often refers to (often wealthier) Filipinos who reside overseas and visit the Philippines periodically, even for extended stays, whereas "kababayan", when applied to overseas Filipinos, means ones that live in the Philippines but are overseas temporarily, even for years. Kababayan is also the name of the Filipino-American club at University of California Irvine. It is also the name of a kulintang-shaped muffin in the Philippines.

- The Philippine Independent Church (Spanish: Iglesia Filipina Independiente; Tagalog: Malayang Simbahan ng Pilipinas; Latin: Libera Ecclesia Philippina, colloquially called the Aglipayan Church) is an independent Christian denomination in the form of a national church in the Philippines. Its schism from the Roman Catholic Church was proclaimed in 1902 by the members of the Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina due to the alleged mistreatment of the Filipinos by Spanish priests and the execution of José Rizal during Spanish colonial rule. Isabelo de los Reyes was one of the initiators of the separation, and suggested that former Catholic priest Gregorio Aglipay be the head of the church. It is also known as the "Aglipayan Church", after its first Supreme Bishop, Gregorio Aglipay, who like José Rizal, later became a Freemason, in May 1918. Pope Leo XIII instructed the Archbishop of Manila, Bernardino Nozaleda y Villa to excommunicate those who initiated the schism. Since 1960 the church has been in full communion with the Episcopal Church in the United States, and through it, the entire Anglican Communion. Members commonly believe in the rejection of the exclusivity right to apostolic succession by the Petrine papacy, the allowing of priestly ordination of women, optional clerical celibacy, tolerance of Freemasonry, lack of requiring in believing transubstantiation and the Real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and support for contraception and same-sex civil rights. Many saints canonized by Rome after the 1902 schism are not recognized by the Aglipayan church and its members.

The church reached the pinnacle of its power during the 1986 “People Power” revolts against the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship, when then Cardinal Jaime Sin called on ordinary Filipinos to join anti-regime protests. The church also played a central role during the second “People Power” revolt in 2001, which deposed the corrupt populist administration of actor-turned-politician Joseph Estrada. In the past decade, however, the influence of the Catholic Church has been on the wane, partly due to the rise of well-organised and politically active evangelist groups that have won the loyalty of millions of ‘born again’ Filipinos and act as ‘swing states’ during elections. The Catholic authorities also suffered a political defeat during their showdown over the controversial Reproductive Health bill, which was passed under the previous Benigno Aquino administration and sanctioned the state-provision of contraceptives to indigent families. The episode underscored an emerging schism between former allies, namely the middle class-supported liberal democrats (led by Aquino) and the church hierarchy, who jointly deposed the Marcos and Estrada presidencies.
- The Black Nazarene (Spanish: El Nazareno Negro, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, Filipino: Poóng Itím na Nazareno, Hesus Nazareno) is a life-sized image of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying the Cross enshrined in the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in the Quiapo district of the City of Manila, Philippines. The Black Nazarene was carved by an unknown Mexican from a dark wood in the 16th century in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines in 1606. It depicts Jesus en route to his crucifixion. Pope Innocent X granted recognition to the lay Confraternity of Santo Cristo Jesús Nazareno in 1650 for the promotion of the devotion to Jesus through the icon.[3] It was housed in several churches near Manila in the early decades, arriving in Quiapo Church in 1787 where it has been enshrined ever since. The icon is renowned in the Philippines and is considered by many Filipino Catholics to be miraculous; its mere touch reputed to cure disease. It attracts homage by numerous devotees and major processions every year. The image (in recent years a composite replica) is brought out of its shrine in procession three times a year: January 9 (the anniversary of the icon's translation), Good Friday (the Nazarene's liturgical feast, commemorating the culmination of the Passion), and December 31 (New Year's Eve, the first day of its annual novena).[3][5] The January 9 procession re-enacts the image's Traslación (literally "transfer") in 1787, or "solemn transfer" to the Minor Basilica from its original shrine inside Intramuros. The January 9 Traslación is the largest procession, drawing millions of devotees thronging to touch the icon and lasting 20 hours at the most. The Black Nazarene is venerated by Filipino devotees every Friday. - The Tagalog people (Baybayin: ᜆᜄᜎᜓᜄ᜔) are a major ethnolingustic group in the Philippines. They have a well developed society due to their cultural heartland, Manila, being the capital city of the Philippines. Most of them inhabit and form a majority in the Metro Manila and Calabarzon regions of southern Luzon, as well as a plurality in the provinces of Bulacan, Bataan, Zambales, Nueva Ecija and Aurora in Central Luzon and in the islands of Marinduque and Mindoro in MIMAROPA.The commonly accepted origin for the endonym "Tagalog" is the term tagá-ilog, which means "people from [along] the river". An alternative theory states that the name is derived from tagá-alog, which means "people from the ford" (the prefix tagá- meaning "coming from" or "native of")
- The Ilocanos (Ilokano: Tattao nga Iloko/Ilokano), Ilokanos, or Iloko people are the third largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group that mostly reside within the Ilocos Regionin the northwestern seaboard of Luzon, Philippines. The word Ilokano originates from Iloko (archaic form, Yloco), the conjugation of i- (meaning "of") and look (meaning "bay"), which means "from the bay" in Ilocano. Aside from being referred to as Ilocano, they are also identified as Samtoy, a portmanteau of the Ilocano phrase sao mi ditoy meaning "our language here" (sao mi - "our language"; ditoy - "here").Most Ilocanos are Roman Catholics, while a significant number[quantify] belong to the Aglipayan Church, which originated in Ilocos Norte. Many Filipino Americans are of Ilocano descent. They make up 85% of the Filipino population in Hawai'i.

Tagalog (/təˈɡɑːlɒɡ/; Tagalog pronunciation: [tɐˈɡaːloɡ]) is an Austronesian language spoken as a first language by a quarter of the population of the Philippines and as a second language by the majority. Its standardized form, officially named Filipino, is the national language of the Philippines, and is one of two official languages alongside English. It is related to other Philippine languages, such as the Bikol languages, Ilocano, the Visayan languages, Kapampangan, and Pangasinan, and more distantly to other Austronesian languages, such as the Formosan languages of Taiwan, Malay(Malaysian and Indonesian), Hawaiian, Māori, and Malagasy. The word Tagalog is derived from the endonym taga-log ("river dweller"), composed of tagá- ("native of" or "from") and ilog ("river").
- Filipino (English: /ˌfɪlɪˈpiːnoʊ/ ; Wikang Filipino [wɪˈkɐŋ ˌfiːliˈpiːno]) is the national language (Wikang pambansa / Pambansang wika) of the Philippines. Filipino is also designated, along with English, as an official language of the country.[4] It is a standardized variety of the Tagalog language,[5] an Austronesianregional language that is widely spoken in the Philippines.
- The Tagalog term maharlika has the same Sanskrit origins as the Malay merdeka and means freeman, libertos or Freedman in classical Philippine society.
- Mabuhay is a Filipino greeting, usually expressed as Mabuhay!, in the imperative form of life, thus, Live!, from the root word buhay (life). The phrase carries various meanings including "long live", "may you live", "cheers", "welcome", and "hurrah". It is thus analogous to the Romance language expression “Vive, Viva”, the Hindustani suffix Zindabad, and the Japanese exclamation Banzai.

History
- The Sultanate of Sulu (Tausūg: Kasultanan sin Sūg, Jawi: کسلطانن سولو دار الإسلام, Malay: Kesultanan Sulu, Arabic: سلطنة سولك) was a Muslim state[note 1] that ruled the islands in the Sulu Archipelago, parts of Mindanao, certain portions of Palawan and north-eastern Borneo (present-day the certain parts of Sabah and North Kalimantan). The sultanate was founded on 17 November 1405.[5][note 2] by a Johore-born explorer and religious scholar Sharif ul-Hashim. Paduka Mahasari Maulana al Sultan Sharif ul-Hashim became his full regnal name, Sharif-ul Hashim is his abbreviated name. He settled in Buansa, Sulu. After the marriage of Abu Bakr and a local dayang-dayang (princess) Paramisuli, he founded the sultanate. The Sultanate gained its independence from the Bruneian Empire in 1578.At its peak, it stretched over the islands that bordered the western peninsula of Mindanao in the east to Palawan in the north. It also covers the area in northeastern side of Borneo, stretching from Marudu Bay,[10][11] to Tepian Durian (in present-day Kalimantan).
- The Commonwealth of the Philippines (Spanish: Mancomunidad de Filipinas,[1][3] Tagalog: Komonwelt ng Pilipinas) was the administrative body that governed the Philippines from 1935 to 1946, aside from a period of exile in the Second World War from 1942 to 1945 when Japan occupied the country. It replaced the Insular Government, a United States territorial government, and was established by the Tydings–McDuffie Act. The Commonwealth was designed as a transitional administration in preparation for the country's full achievement of independence. During its more than a decade of existence, the Commonwealth had a strong executive and a Supreme Court. Its legislature, dominated by the Nacionalista Party, was at first unicameral, but later bicameral. In 1937, the government selected Tagalog–the language of Manila and its surrounding provinces–as the basis of the national language, although it would be many years before its usage became general. Women's suffrage was adopted and the economy recovered to its pre-Depression level before the Japanese occupation in 1942. The Commonwealth government went into exile from 1942 to 1945, when the Philippines was under Japanese occupation. In 1946, the Commonwealth ended and the Philippines claimed full sovereignty as provided for in Article XVIII of the 1935 Constitution. The Commonwealth ended when the U.S. recognized Philippine independence on July 4, 1946, as scheduled.[28][29] However, the economy remained dependent on the U.S.[30] This was due to the Bell Trade Act, otherwise known as the Philippine Trade Act, which was a precondition for receiving war rehabilitation grants from the United States.
- The People Power Revolution (also known as the EDSA Revolution and the Philippine Revolution of 1986) was a series of popular demonstrations in the Philippines that began in 1983 and culminated on February 22–25, 1986. There was a sustained campaign of civil resistance against regime violence and electoral fraud. The nonviolent revolution led to the departure of President Ferdinand Marcos and the restoration of democracy in the Philippines. It is also referred to as the Yellow Revolution due to the presence of yellow ribbons during the demonstrations following the assassination of Filipino senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. It was widely seen as a victory of the people against the 20-year running authoritarian, repressive regime of then president Ferdinand Marcos.

- The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (P.L. 66-261), also known as the Jones Act, is a United States federal statute that provides for the promotion and maintenance of the American merchant marine.[1] Among other purposes, the law regulates maritime commerce in U.S. waters and between U.S. ports. Section 27 of the Jones Act deals with cabotage and requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried on U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents. The act was introduced by Senator Wesley Jones. Laws similar to the Jones Act date to the early days of the nation. In the First Congress, on September 1, 1789, Congress enacted Chapter XI, “An Act for Registering and Clearing Vessels, Regulating the Coasting Trade, and for other purposes”, which limited domestic trades to American ships meeting certain requirements. The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 has been revised a number of times; the most recent revision in 2006 included recodification in the U.S. Code. In early 2015 Senator John McCain filed for an amendment that would essentially annul the Act.

- The Manila Galleons (Spanish: Galeón de Manila, Filipino: Kalakalang Galyon ng Maynila at Acapulco) were Spanish trading ships which made round-trip voyages once or twice per year across the Pacific Ocean from the port of Acapulco (present-day Mexico) to Manila in the Philippineswhich were both part of New Spain. The name of the galleon changed to reflect the city that the ship sailed from.[1] The term Manila Galleons is also used to refer to the trade route between Acapulco and Manila, which lasted from 1565 to 1815. The Manila Galleons were also known in New Spain as "La Nao de la China" (The China Ship) because it carried largely Chinese goods, shipped from Manila. The Manila Galleon trade route was inaugurated in 1565 after Augustinian friar and navigator Andrés de Urdaneta discovered the tornaviaje or return route from the Philippines to Mexico. The first successful round trips were made by Urdaneta and by Alonso de Arellano that year. The route lasted until 1815 when the Mexican War of Independence ended Spanish control of Mexican ports. The Manila galleons sailed the Pacific for 250 years, bringing to Spain their cargoes of luxury goods, slaves, economic benefits, and cultural exchange.

The Palace is in fact a complex of buildings built largely in Spanish colonial and Neo-classical style. The original structure was built in 1750 by Don Luís Rocha as a summer house along the Pasig River. It was purchased by the state in 1825 as the summer residence for the Spanish Governor-General. After the June 3, 1863 earthquake destroyed the Palacio del Gobernador (Governor's Palace) in the walled city of Manila, it became the Governor-General's official residence. After sovereignty over the Islands was ceded to the United States in 1898, it became the residence of the American Governors, with General Wesley Merritt being the first. Since 1863, the Palace has been occupied by eighteen Spanish Governors-General, fourteen American Military and Civil Governors, and later the Presidents of the Philippines.

- balikbayan boxes practice originates with a Philippines government-sponsored programme that offered special tourism incentives, including baggage allowances, to encourage overseas workers to return and spend their wages in the homeland. Today balikbayan boxes, named after the Tagalog word for a returning Filipino, have become one of the most enduring symbols of the Filipino diaspora. The boxes help feed relatives who are struggling, console daughters separated from their mothers, and give far-flung overseas workers a tangible tether to their families. “There are many who spend their entire lives as carers, and the boxes are sometimes their only remnant of a home in the Filipino community,” said Anthony Ocampo, a professor of sociology at Cal Poly Pomona and the author of The Latinos of Asia: How Filipinos Break the Rules of Race. For many overseas Filipinos, balikbayan boxes became the best way to bridge that distance. Carmelita De La Cruz, 70, who worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, scrimped and saved to put dresses, chocolates and toys in her children’s care packages. Now, about 10 million Filipinos work abroad. About 400,000 balikbayan boxes are sent every month, according to the Door-to-door Consolidated Association of the Philippines. That number drastically increases during the holiday season. In 1987, the government officially waived taxes and duties on goods in balikbayan boxes. Around that time, in Los Angeles and other Filipino enclaves in the US, entrepreneurs like Rico Nunga, 60, began to offer door-to-door delivery of balikbayan boxes to the Philippines for between US$40 to US$80 -cheaper than it would cost to send a box across the street. Nunga, who founded one of the first door-to-door companies in 1985, said the box sizes were set large to maximise the space inside standard shipping containers.
Other box companies quickly spread to Filipino enclaves around the United States, where they’re now a common sight in places such as West Covina, Eagle Rock and Carson, especially near locations of the Filipino supermarket Seafood City. http://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/2143906/homesick-filipinos-overseas-fuel-billion-dollar-gift-box

- The Alaskeros are Filipino seasonal migrant workers in the United States and their descendants. They worked in salmon canneries in Alaska during the summer, and on farms on the west coastduring the rest of the year. The Alaskeros were instrumental in the formation of the first Filipino-led union in the U.S., the Cannery Workers and Farm Laborers Union, Local 7 (Seattle, WA). After Spain relinquished the Philippine Islands to the U.S. under the Treaty of Paris in 1898, Filipinos became American nationals and had the ability to migrate to the U.S. to find a better life, while providing cheap labor for the agriculture and fish cannery industries.[2] A large amount of these immigrants first started being recruited for work by contractors for the salmon canneries and mines in Alaska. In the canneries, Filipinos worked with other groups of Asians loading and unloading trucks; and line jobs consisting of sorting, gutting, cleaning, and packing fish. The tasks of maintenance and operations were assigned to the whites. After negotiations of the Gentlemen's Agreement with Japan in 1908, along the Chinese Exclusion Act in effect, Filipinos arrived to the U.S. in significant numbers, taking the place of a large amount of the Chinese and Japanese labor workers in the canneries. Seattle's International District became the homequarters for Alaskeros during the cold months of the year. They would share hotel and boardinghouse rooms to save money before sailing back up north to work in the canneries from late spring to late summer. The population of Alaskeros in Washington grew between 1910 and 1930 from 1700 to 3500. Nearly 1000 Filipinos were recruited by the Japanese and Chinese in 1921 to work in the Alaskan fisheries, and by the mid-1930s, they had become the dominant population in the canneries. Despite this fact, very few Filipinos became contractors, as they were halted from advancing past the position of foreman. This was mainly due to the fact of contractor positions were being held by mainly Japanese and Chinese employees. They entered into the canning industry before the Filipinos, and they held onto these jobs, while Filipinos worked as unskilled laborers in mechanized plants. Filipinos were dependent on whatever the Chinese and Japanese contractors made available to them, and their lack of proficiency in the English language as well as the difference in wages between the U.S. and the Philippines left them to be taken advantage of. The contractors would sell them items that were supposed to be compensated to the workers, such as food, work supplies, bedding and lodging.[4] Sometimes, the contractors would take off without paying Filipino laborers their wages at the end of the season, leaving them without any money, and with no way to leave. Some Filipino foremen would charge the workers half a month's wages as a finder's fee for the cannery job. Unfortunately, mistreatment of fellow ethnics by more competent workers is a common occurrence in the migrant society. Alaskeros faced less discrimination in Alaska than in the U.S. mainland, mostly due to the native Eskimos and the large Asian community that was already present in the area. Some cannery workers lived in Alaska permanently, marrying Eskimo women and establishing their own communities there. In 1935, they formed the Filipino Community of Juneau.

Along with the Santo Niño, (Child Jesus) it is the most popular object of devotion in the Philippines.[10] A similar image called Cristo Negro is venerated in Portobelo, Panama.

It is one of many suyat scripts in the Philippines. It continued to be used during the early part of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines until largely being supplanted by usage of the Latin alphabet. Baybayin is well known because it was carefully documented by scribes during the colonial era. The term baybayín literally means "to spell, write, and syllabize" in Tagalog.

Prior to the mission, during the voyages of famous Chinese navigator Zheng He (1371-1433), several envoys were sent to pay visits to Southeast Asian countries; one of those envoys was welcomed by the authority and people of the ancient Sulu kingdom.Chinese Emperor Yong Le reciprocated with fine hospitality and entertainment worthy of royalty when meeting the Sulu kings. On his way home, Paduka Pahala, the East King of Sulu, died of a disease in Dezhou, a city in East China's Shandong province. The Ming Dynasty emperor commissioned artisans to build a tomb for the king, which still stands today in the Chinese city. Some descendants of Paduka Pahala remained in China as grave keepers and were attended to by three Chinese Muslim families who relocated to live with them. They picked up the surnames An and Wen during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and now more than 3,700 descendants live in different parts of China.

- The Tydings–McDuffie Act, officially the Philippine Independence Act (Pub.L. 73–127, 48 Stat. 456, enacted March 24, 1934) is a United States federal law that established the process for the Philippines, an American colony, to become an independent country after a ten-year transition period. Under the act, the 1935 Constitution of the Philippines was written and Commonwealth of the Philippines was established, with the first directly elected President of the Philippines (direct elections to the Philippine Legislature have been held since 1907). It also established limitations on Filipino immigration to the United States. The act was authored in the 73rd United States Congress by Senator Millard E. Tydings (Dem.) of Maryland and Representative John McDuffie (Dem.) of Alabama, and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Customs officials discovered that 48 containers, designated as carrying plastic scrap, contained solid waste when they were opened in May. The shipment was left unclaimed after arriving at the Manila International Container Port in 2013.

- On Wednesday, a Russian diplomat in Manila said a joint military technical cooperation agreement was being discussed between officials from the Russian Federation and the Philippines. Discussions were “now going back and forth between the foreign offices of both countries”, said Denis Karanin, second secretary of the Russian Embassy in Manila, in a rare media briefing arranged by the Philippine Presidential Communications Operations Office. “Someone is offering a draft and there’s a counter-draft. I think it should be somewhere in the final stages already.”Such an agreement would cover, for instance, a factory that weapons maker Kalashnikov has long wanted to build. “It’s been discussed for quite a long time. Unfortunately, it does take a long time but we’re optimistic about that,” Karanin said.
The diplomat added that the first joint exercises had taken place when two Philippine warships, BRP Davao del Sur and BRP Tarlac, visited the eastern city of Vladivostok last July. He also said Russian military schools had “standing invitations” for Philippine military trainees and cadets to study there. W
ith regard to Moscow’s desire for having a permanent Russian military presence in the Philippines in the form of a resupply base for its navy, Karanin said “no actual progress has been made”.“There’s a lot going on. It’s not just one project,” he said. “In 2017, we conducted training for [Duterte’s] presidential protection unit in Russia. They were quite excited by the training unit they went through. “Russia is definitely willing to share some of its technologies,” such as in cybersecurity, Karanin said. In fact, he revealed, Russian cybersecurity company Bizon had already “signed a contract with some Philippine government structures to enhance their cybersecurity”.“Kaspersky Lab wants to establish a permanent presence in the Philippines,” he added.

- https://www.ft.com/content/3f6df338-056b-11e7-ace0-1ce02ef0def9 The Philippines has boasted of an early win in its pivot from the US to China: a surge in sales of tropical fruits for which President Rodrigo Duterte’s home island is renowned. Exports of Philippine bananas have soared since the outspoken leader’s landmark October trip to Beijing led China to lift import curbs imposed in the wake of maritime territory dispute. Manila’s banana diplomacy underlines the fruit’s role as a bellwether of the country’s domestic politics and Asia’s security dynamics. - Confusion lingers over whether the mainland is considering a plan to allow domestic helpers from the Philippines to be hired in five big cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.A Filipino official claimed China had been studying the possibility of such a plan and that there had been preliminary talks between middle-ranking officials from China and the Philippines. Dominador Say, undersecretary for employment and policy support at the Philippines department of labour and employment, said a representative from the Chinese embassy in Manila had visited the department last month to discuss a preliminary plan. “We talked about the possibility of hiring Filipino workers in China,” Say told the South China Morning Post yesterday. However, Say said he could not remember the name or title of the Chinese official. He was responding to queries about a report carried in the Manila Bulletin newspaper on Monday in which he discussed the plan. The Chinese embassy, however, told the Post that it was not aware of the matter and declined to comment further. The Philippines’ labour secretary, Silvestre Bello, on Monday also denied knowledge of the matter. Say was quoted as saying that the Chinese official he met had noted that many Chinese families could now afford to hire Filipino helpers, whom they liked for their peaceful culture and proficiency in English, which could help their children in their studies. In July 2015, Shanghai began allowing foreign residents to hire domestic helpers from overseas, but Chinese citizens were still banned from employing them.“In many of Beijing’s high-end residential communities, Filipino maids are frequently seen working illegally. The employment of these workers has become a fact on the mainland,” Miao Lu, secretary general of the Beijing-based Centre for China and Globalisation think tank, said.http://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2104911/filipino-domestic-helpers-may-soon-be-legal-china

The amount is equivalent to 8 per cent of a helper’s wage of HK$4,520 a month. The bill, which is expected to be signed into law later this year by Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, also requires all departing overseas Filipino workers to pay at least three monthly contributions before they can leave for their job destinations. Prior to the bill, departing workers could opt out of paying for SSS membership.Last week, Filipino workers’ groups in Hong Kong vowed to fight tooth and nail against a plan by Manila’s Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to make domestic helpers take out insurance.
