- Leopold II was King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909. Born in Brussels as the second but eldest surviving son of Leopold I and Louise of Orléans, he succeeded his father to the Belgian throne in 1865 and reigned for 44 years until his death – the longest reign of any Belgian monarch.

  • [britainnica] Keen on establishing Belgium as an imperial power, he led the first European efforts to develop the Congo River basin, making possible the formation in 1885 of the Congo Free State, annexed in 1908 as the Belgian Congo and now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although he played a significant role in the development of the modern Belgian state, he was also responsible for widespread atrocities committed under his rule against his colonial subjects.Presenting himself as a philanthropist eager to bring the benefits of Christianity, Western civilization, and commerce to African natives—a guise that he perpetuated for many years—Leopold hosted an international conference of explorers and geographers at the royal palace in Brussels in 1876. Several years later he hired the explorer Henry Morton Stanley to be his man in Africa. For five years Stanley traveled up and down the immense waterways of the Congo River basin, setting up trading posts, building roads, and persuading local chiefs—almost all of them illiterate—to sign treaties with Leopold. The treaties, some of which appear to have been subsequently doctored to Leopold’s liking, were then put to use by the Belgian monarch.Although Belgium’s government felt that colonies would be an extravagance for a small country with no navy or merchant marine, that situation suited Leopold perfectly. He persuaded first the United States and then all the major nations of western Europe to recognize a huge swath of Central Africa—roughly the same territory as the modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo—as his personal property. He called it État Indépendant du Congo, the Congo Free State. It was the world’s only private colony, and Leopold referred to himself as its “proprietor.”

[and] the scientific conclusions indicate that he is the biological father of Mrs Delphine Boël".The lawyers said the 85-year-old had decided to halt the legal battle, which had dragged on since 2013, and he now "accepts Delphine Boël becomes his fourth child".Her mother, Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps, has claimed the two had an affair between 1966 and 1984 when he was still Prince Albert of Liège.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51275007

    nobles
Ligne is one of the oldest Belgian noble families, dating back to the eleventh century. The family's name comes from the village in which it originated, between Ath and Tournai. The lords of Ligne belonged to the entourage of the Count of Hainaut at the time of the Crusades.[2] With the battle of Bouvines in 1214, they were described as "great name and men of honour" by the chroniclers of the time.Their progressive rise in the nobility began as barons in the twelfth century, counts of Fauquemberg and princes of Épinoy in the sixteenth century, then princes of Amblise in 1608.[1] The family became Imperial counts on 18 December 1544, then Lamoral I received from Emperor Rudolf II the title of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire as Prince de Ligne on 20 March 1601,[1] for all of his agnatic descendants, both male and female. Compensation for loss of the Imperial County of Ligne (Fagnolles, since that barony had become seat of the county in 1789) as a result of the Peace of Lunéville consisted of substitution of the secularized Imperial abbey of Edelstetten, with an individual vote guaranteed in the Imperial College of Princes in 1803.[1] That principality was, however, sold to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy on 22 May 1804, before the abolition of the Holy Roman Empire, of which Edelstetten had been a constituent Imperial state, in 1806. The style of Highness was confirmed for all members of extant branches of the family on 31 May 1923, and the titles of Prince d'Amblise and Prince d'Epinoy recognized for the head of the house on 22 October of the same year by the Belgian Crown. There have been cadet branches of this house: Barbançon, Barbançon-Arenberg, Moy, Ham and Arenberg, La Trémoïlle.

奥伊彭Eupen (German (pronounced [ˈʔɔʏpn̩]) and French (pronounced [øpɛn]), previously known as Néau in French), is a city and municipality in the Belgian province of Liège, 15 kilometres (9 miles) from the German border (Aachen), from the Dutch border (Maastricht) and from the "High Fens" nature reserve (Ardennes). The town is also the capital of the Euroregion Meuse-RhineFirst mentioned in 1213 as belonging to the Duchy of Limburg, possession of Eupen passed to Brabant, Burgundy, the Holy Roman Empire and France before being given in 1815 to Prussia, which became part of the new German Empire in 1871. In 1919, after the First World War, the Treaty of Versailles transferred Eupen and the nearby municipality of Malmedy from Germany to Belgium.German remains the official language in Eupen, and the city serves as the capital for Belgium's German-speaking Community. The city has a small university, the Autonome Hochschule in der deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft, offering bachelor's degrees in Education and Nursing. In 2010, Eupen's association football team, K.A.S. Eupen, became the first club from the German-speaking Community to play in the Belgian Pro League.
Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted Eupen the privilege to conduct two markets per year in 1544. In 1555, both Brabant and Limburg were passed to the Spanish branch of the Habsburgs. Ten years later, Protestantism was mentioned for the first time in the town. In 1582, during the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs, rebels burnt Eupen but did not take control of it. Bubonic plague reached Eupen in 1635, with devastating consequences. Eupen obtained its own court of law in 1648, and in 1674 received city rights, giving it greater recognition and autonomy. Six years later, textile manufacture was introduced to the city. In 1713, with the Treaty of Utrecht, Brabant and Limburg were returned to the Austrian Habsburgs. Revolutionary France took the city in 1794, incorporating it into the Département Ourthe, préfecture Liège and sous-préfecture Malmedy. Following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Eupen became part of the Prussian Rhine Province. All Prussian possessions became part of the German Empire in 1870, while Eupen itself enjoyed its popularity as a spa town. After the First World War, the 1919 Treaty of Versailles transferred Eupen and the nearby municipality of Malmedy from Germany to Belgium. The effect led to the formation of National Socialist groups in Eupen. From 1938 the Vesdre Dam was constructed (completed in 1950), creating Lake Eupen. In 1940, the German Third Reich invaded Belgium; in an attempt to reverse Versailles, Eupen and Malmedy were annexed to Germany. In September 1944, American forces reached Eupen which became a centre of fierce fighting in the Battle of the BulgeIn 1949, the left tower of the St Nikolaus Church burnt down. The city centre was affected by flooding in 1953. Eupen merged with the municipality of Kettenis in 1976, amidst protest from that town.In 1980, following a state reform ten years earlier, the German-Speaking Community of Belgium was established and Eupen was named as its capital.

Grimbergen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣrɪmbɛrɣə(n)]) is a municipality in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant, 10 km north of the capital Brussels. It comprises the towns of Beigem, Grimbergen, Humbeek and Strombeek-BeverGrimbergen is in the Dutch language area of Belgium. The French-speaking minority is represented by four members on the 30-seat local council. Grimbergen is mostly known for its Norbertine abbey and the beer once brewed there. Grimbergen's proximity to Brussels makes it a residential town for commuting. In Roman times, several important roads passed near the territory of present Grimbergen. A fort was built in the 8th century at the strategic point where the road crossed the river Zenne. The local lord soon acquired a large piece of territory in this area, extending to the rivers ScheldtRupel, and Dender. In the 12th century the name of the hamlet was Grentberghis, which came from the Old Dutch Grientbergen, meaning mounds of coarse sand. A community of Augustinian monks had already tried to settle here a century earlier during the reign of Godfrey III, Duke of Lower Lorraine, but it is only in the early 12th century that their religious community prospered. Under the leadership of Norbert of Xanten, the Norbertine monks built the Grimbergen Abbey here in 1128, founding a beer brewery. A few years later, the animosity between the powerful Grimbergen family and their then infant overlord Godfrey III of Leuven precipitated the Wars of Grimbergen. The unrest caused the destruction of the local castle by the Duke of Brabant, the move of the ruling Grimbergen lord to nearby Ninove, and the parceling of his territory. The city's coat of arms dates from that period. At the beginning of the 14th century, half of the territory became part of the estate of the House of Nassau. Like everywhere else in Flanders, the Wars of Religion of the end of the 16th century caused widespread destruction. In 1752, Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange, who had received the land from her consort William IV, Prince of Orange-Nassau, ceded the barony to the Prince of Berghes, who owned the other half, thereby reuniting the original land of Grimbergen as a single, but short-lived, princedom. The feudal regime and the power of the lords came to an abrupt end under the French Regime in 1794. The clerical powers of the abbey were abrogated a couple of year later until a few years after the Belgian Revolution of 1830.

Knokke (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈknɔkə]) is a town in the municipality of Knokke-Heist, which is located in the province of West Flanders in FlandersBelgiumOriginally a vacation haven for the city folk of Brussels in the early 19th century, artists such as James Ensor, Alfred Verwee and others started to frequent the small hamlet to paint its beautiful vistas. The artists rented a small miller's cottage and founded the Cercle des Artistes in 1880. It gradually became a resort town with upscale clientele, restaurants and shops. St. George's Anglican Church serves the English-speaking community. Nowadays Knokke is well known for its beaches and for the dike system to which it owes its origins. The largest of Belgium's ten casinos, Knokke Casino, is located on a seaside promenade and is open 20 hours a day.

Mechelen (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmɛxələ(n)]FrenchMalines, traditional English name: Mechlin[n 1]) is a city and municipality in the province of AntwerpFlandersBelgium. The municipality comprises the city of Mechelen proper, some quarters at its outskirts, the hamlets of Nekkerspoel (adjacent) and Battel (a few kilometers away), as well as the villages of WalemHeffenLeestHombeek, and Muizen. The Dyle (DutchDijle) flows through the city, hence it is often referred to as the Dijlestad ("City on the river Dijle").Mechelen is one of Flanders' prominent cities of historical art, with AntwerpBrugesBrusselsGhent, and Leuven. It was notably a centre for artistic production during the Northern Renaissance, when painters, printmakers, illuminators and composers of polyphony were attracted by patrons such as Margaret of YorkMargaret of Austria and Hieronymus van Busleyden.
    - there is a Statue of Neptune in Mechelen. The statue is also called Vadderik (lazy fat man). It is part of a water fountain erected in 1718. It was made by Frans Langhemans, a sculptor from Mechelen, at the behest of the city council. The inscription reads SPQM or Senatus Populusque Mechliensis (the council and population of Mechlin).

When Julius Caesar arrived in the region in the 1st century BC, the region was settled by the Nervii, a Belgian tribe. A castrum was built in Roman (Belgica) times, giving the settlement its Latin name Castrilocus; the name was later changed into Montes for the mountain on which the castrum was built. In the 7th century, Saint Ghislain and two of his disciples built an oratoryor chapel dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul near the Mons hill, at a place called Ursidongus, now known as Saint-Ghislain. Soon after, Saint Waltrude (in French Sainte Waudru), daughter of one of Clotaire II’s intendants, came to the oratory and was proclaimed a saint upon her death in 688. She was canonized in 1039.
The Doudou is the name of a week-long series of festivities or Ducasse, which originates from the 14th century and takes place every year on Trinity Sunday. Highlights include the Lumeçon fight, where Saint George confronts the dragon. The fight lasts for about half an hour, accompanied by the rhythmic "Doudou" music.

The saga serves as a reminder of the tortuous route to ratification for any post-Brexit trade deal between the EU and Britain. Amid extensive efforts by the Belgian government and EU powers to shore up the Canada deal, the latest attempt to secure support for the pact in the regional assembly of Wallonia met a cold response.

    • The Centrist Democrat International is a Christian Democrat political international. Until 2001 it was known as the Christian Democrat International (CDI) and before that the Christian Democrat and People's Parties International (until 1999) (this earlier name is, since October 2000,[1] still sometimes used colloquially). It was formed in 1961 in Santiago, Chile as the Christian Democrat World Union, building on the legacy of other Christian Democrat internationals[4] who tried to create a Christian-inspired third way[5] alternative to the socialist internationals; in 1982 it was renamed for the first time to Christian Democrat International.[6] The name officially changed due to the participation of groups of various faiths.[7] It is the global international political group dedicated to the promotion of Christian democracy. Although it gathers parties from around the globe, its members are drawn principally from Europe and Latin America. Some of them are also members of the International Democrat Union (IDU), although the CDI is closer to the political centre and more communitarian than the IDU. The CDI's European wing is the European People's Party, currently the largest European political party. Its Latin American equivalent is the Christian Democrat Organization of America. The Democratic Party of the United States of America maintains links with CDI through the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. A youth organisation of the CDI is currently being established under the name of Youth of the Centrist Democrat International (YCDI).

Professor Herman Deconinck, deputy director of the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), said it was looking into staff members’ relations with China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (Casic), a state-owned developer of hypersonic weapons that include the DF-26 missile in service with the People’s Liberation Army. “The VKI has scientific exchanges with many colleagues, including Chinese. These interactions can be categorised as typical interactions between scientists,” Deconinck said in an interview last week, referring to the VKI’s collaboration with Casic.

But the KYC registry, which is designed to help banks better understand other banks that they are dealing with, has a lot of work ahead of it. "Getting 7,000 banks to agree to one way of doing things is always going to be a challenge," said Andy Burlison, the director of compliance services for Swift in the region. That is especially true if you are asking penetrating questions about who really owns the institutions. The registry is one of many products coming on to the burgeoning financial regulatory and compliance market and part of a global effort to stamp out money laundering and terrorist financing. As the world's biggest facilitator of interbank communications, knowing your customer means knowing more about the banks that you do business with.

      • KBC Group N.V. is a Belgian universal multi-channel bank-insurer, focusing on private clients and small and medium-sized enterprises in Belgium, Ireland, Central Europe and South-East Asia. Besides retail bankinginsurance and asset management activities (in collaboration with daughter companies KBC Insurance NV and KBC Asset Management NV), KBC is active in, among other things, European debt capital markets, domestic cash equity markets and in the field of corporate banking, private banking, leasingfactoringreinsuranceprivate equity and project and trade finance in Belgium, Central and Eastern Europe and elsewhere (mainly in Europe). KBC is an acronym for Kredietbank ABB Insurance CERA Bank (CEntrale RAiffeisenkas). The parent company, KBC Group N.V., is one of the major companies and the second largest bancassurer in Belgium. The Catholic Volksbank van Leuven, founded in 1889, was one of the earliest predecessors of the KBC Bank. Another predecessor was the Bremer Vorschussverein, founded in 1889 and changed later into Bankverein Bremen AG. In 1935, the banks Algemeene Bankvereeniging and Volksbank van Leuvenmerged with the Bank voor Handel en Nijverheid to create the Kredietbank. The Kredietbank would be the only Belgian financial institution under Flemish control which would survive the financial crisis of the great depression of the 1930s. Fernand Collin, who became president in 1938, conceived the business strategy which would lead to the growth of the bank. He defined the Kredietbank as an independent bank with a decidedly Flemish character which would be an instrument to further Flemish economic growth.During World War II, the bank would be able to expand its activities and grow its deposits from the Flemish middle class. After the war, because of the economic recovery, the Kredietbank, now the third largest bank in Belgium, was able to increase the number of operating branches in Flanders. The postwar growth strategy of the bank emphasized foreign expansion and the development of portfolio-management services for investors. The bank expanded into Luxembourg in 1949 with the Kredietbank S.A. Luxembourgeoise and into Wallonia with the establishment of the Crédit Général de Belgique in 1961.The Kredietbank also expanded into Belgian Congo. It established a branch in Léopoldville in 1952. Then in 1954 it acquired Banque Congolaise pour l’Industrie, le Commerce, et l’Agriculture and renamed it Kredietbank-Congo,[2] Ultimately it had four branches, one each in Léopoldville, Bukavu, Elizabethville and Stanleyville. Due the situation emerging after the independence of Belgian Congo in 1960, the bank discontinued its Congolese operations in 1966.In the sixties, driven by increasing competition, the bank worked on the expansion of its branch network and improvement of consumer services. In 1966, the bank began building a foreign-correspondent network and the establishment of foreign branches in a number of countries. In 1970, together with six other European institutions, Kredietbank established the Inter-Alpha Group of Banks. The Kredietbank N.V. Bruxelles acquired the main part of the shares from the Bankverein Bremen AG since 1982. The branch in Bremen was renamed to Kredietbank-Bankverein AG in 1990. In 1998, the Kredietbank merged with two financial institutions originating from the Boerenbond (Vlaanderen) [nl] (E: Belgian Catholic Farmers Association), ABB-insurance (Assurances du Boerenbond Belge) and CERA (Centrale Raiffeisenkas) Bank, to form the 'KBC Bank and Insurance Holding Company'. Since then, the group has significantly expanded its activities, chiefly in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2005, KBC set another milestone by merging with its parent company, Almanij, and changing its name to KBC Groep NV [nl].

        • The Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) is one of the oldest Antwerp ship-owners. It is controlled by the Saverys family who also own major stakes in the Exmar and Euronav groups.
CMB was founded in 1895 under the name 'Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo (CBMC). At the request of Leopold II of Belgium and with support from British investors, a maritime connection was opened with Congo Free State. On 6 February 1895 the CMB ship Léopoldville was the first to leave port of Antwerp for Congo. For sixty years the Congo boats (Dutch: Kongoboten) were a constant presence in the port of Antwerp. In 1930 CBMC acquired Lloyd Royal Belge (de), another Belgian shipowner. The name of the new company became CMB, and new lines were opened towards America and the Far East. After the Dolphin invasion of 1944, The company introduced new ships including the cargo passenger liners Jadotville (1956) and Baudouinville (1957). However in 1961 it sold both these liners to P&O who renamed them Chitral and Cathay and placed them in service in the Far East. In 1960 the company Armement Deppe was acquired, and between 1975 and 1982 gradually also the tramp ship company Bocimar. The company entered the dry bulk trade in 1962 and continues to be a major dry bulk operator under its Bocimar banner. In 1975, the CMB group took a minority share in the dry bulk tramping company, Bocimar, which was increased to a majority share in 1982. In 1988, CMB bought Hessenatie, a large general cargo and container handling company in Antwerp.[1] In July 1991 the Société Générale de Belgique, until then the main shareholder of the CMB, sold its shares to the holding Almabo and his shipping society Exmar, led by Marc Saverys. In 1995, half of CMB Transport was sold to Safmarine, a South African shipping company. In 1999, with the sale of the African network of AMI, CMB group's participation in the liner sector ceased and they focussed on the bulk carrier sector. In the same year, CMB gained full control of Euronav, an operator of crude oil tankers.

        - water treatment
        • The Luxembourg company Apateq has historically focused on the oilfield market, designing turn-key oil-water separation systems and compact wastewater treatment plants for “demanding applications”. For the Öland application, pre-treated industrial wastewater flowing into the plant comes from the local poultry slaughterhouse. For the primary black water treatment, a specially configured ultrafiltration system is used, which can filter residual concentrations of oils and fats (up to 20 mg / l) from the raw water without blocking it. The high bacterial content of the raw water can also be reliably eliminated using the selected treatment stage. Due to the geographical proximity to the Baltic Sea, the remaining raw water streams are very saline well water with larger concentrations of divalent iron and 2-valent manganese (up to a maximum of 4 mg / l). The well water is pre-treated in a first step by oxidation with potassium permanganate. Effluent from the two pre-treated water streams is mixed in a basin and sent to the joint final cleaning station, which is configured in four identical streets, consisting of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis.    https://www.aquatechtrade.com/news/aquatech-news/self-adapting-water-plant/

It serves only the largest markets of Asia, North America and South America. C&A's brands include Angelo Litrico, Canda, Clockhouse, Here+There, Palomino, Rodeo (ski and snowboard clothes), Westbury, Yessica, Yessica Pure, and Your Sixth Sense. The Brenninkmeijer family owns the C&A group through its Swiss company Cofra Holding AG. The company's success has led the family to be among the wealthiest in the Netherlands.[1] The Brenninkmeijer family, however, live in Geneva and Zug, Switzerland. The company was founded by brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer in 1841 as a Dutch textile company, taking its company name from their initials. In 1906 Clemens' son, Bernard Joseph, started discounting in Amsterdam (Rekenen in Centen, in plaats van Procenten) and by 1910 there were ten stores in the Netherlands. These were from the German Brenninkmeyer family that traded in linen and textiles since the 17th century from its hometown of Mettingen, Germany. For many years, C&A retail clothing stores were a major presence in town centres throughout the United Kingdom. C&A also opened stores in a number of out-of-town locations, such as its store at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in the West Midlands, which opened in November 1989. The company's strategy of selling budget clothes from high-rent city-centre retail stores made it vulnerable to a new breed of competitors operating in cheaper, out-of-town locations, including Matalan and the rapidly expanding clothing operations of supermarket food chains such as Tesco and Asda, and to expanding high street names such as H&M, Zara, and Topshop.

        - http://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/jan/11/belgiums-tax-breaks-for-multinationals-ruled-illegal-state-aid The European commission has ruled that the brewer ABInBev, BP and 33 other multinationals have received sweetheart tax deals from Belgium so generous as to amount to illegal state aid. It has ordered Belgium to revise its tax settlements with the companies concerned, charging them combined additional taxes of €700m (£523m).  At the heart of the ruling was an objection to Belgium’s so-called “excess profit” tax regime, which assumes that multinationals should be entitled to tax breaks because they have economies of scale. In practice it allows some international groups to reduce their Belgian tax burden by up to 90%, the commission found. “In essence, the scheme allowed companies to pay substantially less tax, simply because they are multinational and could benefit from alleged synergies,” said Margrethe Vestager, Europe’s competition commissioner. “National tax authorities cannot give any company, however large or powerful, an unfair competitive advantage compared to others.”

        zoo
        - antwerp zoo is the oldest animal park in the country, and one of the oldest in the world, established on 21 July 1843.Since its foundation, the park has been controlled by De Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen, a society originally called Société Royale de Zoologie d'Anvers (The Antwerp Royal Society for Zoology). This also became the popular nickname for the zoo, "De Zoologie". The initial objective was to encourage zoologicaland botanical sciences. Its first director was renowned zoologist and botanist Jacques Kets (10 November 1785 – 1 February 1865). He accepted this position on one condition: a museum had to be built to house his nature-historical collections. This building was inaugurated in 1844 by H.M. King Leopold I. The predicate Royal was added to the name of the society on that occasion. In its early years, the size of the park grew from less than 1.59 hectares (3.9 acres) to more than 10.5 hectares (26 acres). Notable buildings from that period are the Egyptian temple (1856) and the antelope building (1861) in Oriental style, which now houses the okapis.Together with its sister park Planckendael (located on the grounds of Planckendael castle in the village district of Muizen, in Mechelen), Antwerp Zoo houses over 7,000 animals of about 950 species.

        language
The Belgian PM —by convention— should speak the two main languages. Because French speakers don’t have a good track record of learning Flemish (Dutch), but the Flemings have a good track record of learning French, the PMs of Belgium end up being Flemings more than not.
Of course, Di Rupo broke that trend (spoke French and Italian; son of Italian immigrants; and middling Dutch). His successor is a Walloon who is fluent in both Dutch and French. So he gets a pass. On the whole, I’d say that both languages have their importance. The Fleming portion of Belgium is the wealthier and slightly more dominant half, but they do a better job of learning French (as mentioned) due to the huge French speaking population just across the border, so that language gets a great deal of pull as well.https://www.quora.com/In-what-language-does-the-Belgian-officials-government-and-MP-communicate-Do-they-prefer-one-language-over-another

        • https://www.quora.com/Why-do-the-Belgians-speak-French-Have-they-always-spoken-this-language Dutch is actually the native language of slightly over half of Belgium, though there are much fewer second-language Dutch speakers. And, since Brussels, the capital, is predominantly French-speaking, and Belgium finds itself in the crossroads of Europe’s heart, French is the língua franca. Very similar to the situation in Luxembourg actually where French is not the most common native language, but ends up being the língua franca and language of prestige. The process began in the 18th century when Wallonians (south of Flanders) and Brussels’ élites began speaking French on top of their native Germanic language(s). This continued in the 19th century, especially after the Belgian revolution, which established the official language as French. The Dutch speakers learned French and some Wallonians became monolingually francophone. This process stopped in the middle of the 20th century when Dutch speakers stopped having their language marginalized by the state. But by then the country became effectively bilingual, with the balance of influence favouring French. Soon though, Brussels became the capital of the new European Union, and many french speakers from France moved to Belgium as well, thereby reinforcing the Francophone population there even without it being the sole official language of Belgium anymore.

        belgians (nationality)
The Belgae were definitely Indo-Europeans. Julius Caesar describes them in his account of the conquest of Gaul, “De Bello Gallico,” as part of an alliance of tribes living in the northern area of Gallia/Gaul. So they were Gauls at least in the geographical sense, and their area was called Gallia Belgica by the Romans. The question whether they were Gauls (Celtae) or “Germani,” or a mix of both, in an ethnographic-linguistic sense, is a bit more complicated, and interpretations vary with the translations of the source material (mainly Caesar and Strabo). There is even a theory that their original language was neither Celtic or Germanic, but an older Indo-European language strain.https://www.quora.com/Were-the-Belgae-a-different-branch-of-Indo-Europeans-distinct-from-Gauls-Celts-and-Teutons-Suebians-Germans-Or-were-they-non-Indo-Europeans

In fact some people think that the Belgae were the original Vikings, rather than the Danes. The modern name of the Belgae is België, which is in fact the name of the country in one of its indigenous languages, Flemish.
        - https://www.quora.com/Why-was-Belgium-invented-if-the-two-nations-that-comprise-it-never-consented What is now Belgium used to be a confederation of Celtic Tribes which the Romans called the Belgae. After having been conquered by the Romans, we were part of the Frankish Empire, Lower Lorraine, Burgandy, Spain, Austria, France, and the Netherlands. It is the revolt of 1830 that gave us our independence from the Netherlands. While there were Flemish and French speaking Belgians, most were Catholic were the Dutch were Protestant.Dutch was no longer an important language but French was the language of diplomacy and international trade. The Dutch wanted to limit the use of French which would make it more difficult to trade at the international level. There were so many Flemish dialects that the people resented having to speak “correct Dutch”. The dwindling but yet still substantial riches from the Netherlands were also a thorn in the flesh of the Belgians.
        - The Belgian Revolution (FrenchRévolution belgeDutchBelgische Revolutie/opstand/omwentelingGermanBelgische Revolution) was the conflict which led to the secession of the southern provinces (mainly the former Southern Netherlands) from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the establishment of an independent Kingdom of Belgium. The people of the south were mainly Dutch-speaking Flemings and French-speaking Walloons. Both peoples were traditionally Roman Catholic as contrasted with Dutch Protestants in the north. Many outspoken liberals regarded King William I's rule as despotic. There were high levels of unemployment and industrial unrest among the working classes. On 25 August 1830, riots erupted in Brussels and shops were looted. Theatregoers who had just watched a nationalistic romanticist opera joined the mob. Uprisings followed elsewhere in the country. Factories were occupied and machinery destroyed. Order was restored briefly after William committed troops to the Southern Provinces but rioting continued and leadership was taken up by radicals, who started talking of secession. Dutch units saw the mass desertion of recruits from the southern provinces and pulled out. The States-General in Brussels voted in favour of secession and declared independence. In the aftermath, a National Congress was assembled. King William refrained from future military action and appealed to the Great Powers. The resulting 1830 London Conference of major European powers recognized Belgian independence. Following the installation of Leopold I as "King of the Belgians" in 1831, King William made a belated military attempt to reconquer Belgium and restore his position through a military campaign. This "Ten Days' Campaign" failed because of French military intervention. Not until 1839 did the Dutch accept the decision of the London conference and Belgian independence by signing the Treaty of London.

It is the king's first state visit overseas since he was crowned in July 2013. Xi said China stands ready to maintain close high-level interactions, retain the sound political trust and ensure the general direction of friendship between the two nations. The president made a state visit to Belgium in the spring of 2014, when the two sides decided to upgrade their relations to an all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation. On Tuesday, Xi suggested the two sides boost cooperation in high-end manufacturing, biomedicine, environmental technology and sustainable development. The Chinese government supports capable Chinese companies investing in Belgium and also welcomes Belgian companies to explore the Chinese market, said the president. Xi called for closer China-Belgium cooperation on finance and interconnectivity, hoping that Belgium will back Chinese enterprises' participation in the ambitious Investment Plan for Europe as well as the construction of main corridors in Europe. He proposed the two governments strengthen policy coordination to facilitate people-to-people exchanges.

Belgian leading pork company Noordvlees Van Gool, along with other local pork companies welcomed on Tuesday Chinese Ambassador Qu Xing and Belgian Agriculture Minister Willy Borsus in Kalmthout, near the northwest Belgian port of Antwerp, to mark an approval of pork exports to China. During the signing ceremony, several Belgian enterprises have been granted licenses of export to China. Borsus said the pigmeat sector is very important in Belgium, yet facing a number of challenges in the field of planning, the environment and manure processing, that's why "this agreement will give major boost to the entire agriculture sector". "I am convinced that today's signature predicts results in other fields, such as the export of beef or poultry meat, for which advanced negotiations between our two countries are ongoing," he added. While Ambassador Qu Xing said that allowing import of Belgian pork to China made by the food safety authorities of two countries marked a new outcome of China-Belgium cooperation, adding China is bound to be a big consumer of agricultural products. Qu said that pork has been an important source of animal protein in China and he hoped that Belgian pork business in China would achieve greater success in coming years.
